Conventional casting problems...

811 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Jameson
Crazy Al, I have a collection of Conventionals (Amb 4500, 5500, 7000, 9000), Penn 975 Mag, and Shimano Calcutta. The Calcutta or Amb 5500 will both put 4 oz lures way out there (on a Loomis 10') but the Amb 7000 won't quite compete. On my larger baitsticks (Penn Sportfisher 11'3" or Loomis 12') the Penn Mag will run circles around the Amb 9000. So my question is: Why does the Amb 9000 not perform (vis a vis the Penn) and the Amb 7000 not perform (vis a vis the Calcutta or the Amb 5500) ?

Whaaaa?!!

OTF-

The 7000 Ambassadeur series is a very good caster.

Is it a levelwind model? If it is than it will get approximately 15% less distance than a non-levelwind model.

Suggestions:

1)Properly clean and re-oil your reel.
2)Remove a few fiber brake blocks
3)Properly adjust spool tension.

1) Cleaning. Rinse reel with warm water. Remove the two ball bearings (one in each endcap), flush them with WD-40 repeatedly and allow them to dry (a blow dryer helps...use a wooden skewer or a piece of trolling wire to hold onto the bearings while you dry them on heat).

After cleaning and drying the bearings, apply a drop of furnished reel oil or use 20 weight 3:1 oil from the hardware store.

Wipe the ends of the spool spindles off with a clean, dust-free rag. Apply a drop of oil to each spindle.

2) Your reel has four brake blocks on the right sideplate. Use two instead of four and see if that helps.

3) Adjust spool tension. Screw the bearing end-cap on the right side of the reel (underneath the star drag) all the way. Loosen the LEFT side so that there is play. Push down the spool button so that you are in free spool, then gradually start tightening the LEFT endcap until the spool just starts to turn...that is your "zero" that you can play with to adjust +/-.

Hope this helps.

Reels

The ambassador should cast like a charm!! Some of the best surffisherman use only them! I grew up using my fathers snagging bunker in the sound as a kid and they are the best....you can adjust the tension so you wont even need to thumb the reel and zing it way out there. The way it sounds it may be time for you to tune your reels...i do it once a year just to make sure i have no mishaps it will only cause less errors while fishing, plus its fun. Also do you have different pound line on each reel they will cast different, you may want to check into that too. Best of Luck to ya!

Does the 7000 havew bushings or bearings?

I had an older model with bushings and it didn't cast well. Got the bearings, took out the blocks, and I couldn't control it for a week LOL. Seriously though, it is tamed now and really a serious caster. I oil the levelwind and the levelwind gears inside the plate, as well as both sides of the bearings with militec one, and two drops on the outside before I screw them in. Unless in high wind I have the lef one so that in frespool the spool has the slightest of side-side play, I get more distance that way. Keep the levelwind clear, and your bearings oiled, and remove brake blocks on that spindle thingy. Then you will see a HUGE improvement. The brake blocks alone make for a big improvement. Good luck.
