What are the main differences between blood and sandworms? I know sandworms live in the water, but do bloodworms live in the water or in the ground? because when i bought bloodworms for flounder yesterday, i had some left over, and i buried them in my backyard. Do you think they will live and will be able to found for my next trip?

Hi,

I think your a little confused about what you bought. If they were packed in black dirt they are earthworms and placing them in you backyard in not a bad idea but they will be long gone for your next trip.

If they were packed in seaweed from the tackle store, you have either bloodworms or sandworms. Bloodworms are thinner and have a nasty head with a pincher which shoots out at you when it feel threatened.

Sandworms are thicker, darker and have multiple very small fleshy legs(?) along the sides. They also have a pincher which comes out of the head area.

If they were packed with seaweed, burying them in your backyard was the wrong thing to do. That will kill them. They live in the intertidal zone of beaches.

Honestly...

You could not mistake a bloodworm. Where do you think it got its name??

It bleeds profusely when you hook'em, cut'em, whatever'em!

They're good bait...but given the choice I go for Sandworms. Unless I got girlfriends fishing with me...then it's bloodworms for sure!

They were packaged in that seaweed/kelp stuff. They were bloodworms. They did bleed profusevly and i did bury them in my backyard. Its been 40 hours since they were buried. I checked on them an hour ago, in the dirt.

Can anybody guess what happend to them??

...........

when i checked on them, they were very cold, they were moving but now very much. I put three of them under one stone and two under another. They were alive and kicking. I was amazed to see them feeding on earthworms. They also had some bites in them. Maybe they tried to eat each other???

Your wife/girlfriend might not like this but keep the worms in the fridge just like baitshops do and they will last several days. Just keep them moist with salt water, not tap water.

As for burying them, I'm surpised raccoons, skunks did not find them.

lastly for all, has anyone had any great success digging and using tapeworms. Saw an old timer do this once and it seemed like a lot of work with no notable improvements in flounder catch.

I was on a party boat when we came across a drifting tapeworm and the mate netted it and treated it like gold. It did catch a few fish but so did all the other baits.
