Al...............have you ever fished the Colorado River?
Below Hoover Dam or any other such parts?

I'll be backpacking inside the Grand Canyon mid April for 8 nights and swore on last years trip that I'd bring some fishing gear.
I'm bringing a lightweight rod/reel and am looking for a few hints on lures/spinner baits or any sugestions anyone may have.

Hi PaddleOn,

Yes, I've fished the Hoover Dam areas and Arizona's rivers (Canyon River)!
It's been a long time since I fished it but I do remember that I had some huge carp and trout!

The key is to use light line (4 & 6 lbs. test) and this is where fluorocarbon leader would work!

I also fly fished and noticed that the early lights was the most productive times! The sunset was not that productive and I don't know why.

In the fly department, dry caddis flies, #16 olive nymphs and streamers was key. In the ultralight stuff… small ¼ - 1/2 oz. Motor oil grubs, countdown silver/black rapala and ¼ & 1/8 gold kastmaster did the damages.

All in all, downsize your tackle… use light lines…. Light lures…fluorocarbon leader and your odds will increase!

Hope this helps! :)

Thanks Al!
I was planning on going ultra light............especially since packweight is a factor when hiking into the Canyon.
I've got 7 nights at the bottom and about 75 miles of hiking. Each night has us camped at a different part of the Colorado River and having been there last year I KNOW there are some beautifull trout swimming in those chilly waters( seen em ;) )

I lived in Nevada in 1981 for a year and fished below Hoover Dam just about every week( Willow Beach area).............but thought I'd ask for some advice as my fishing skills are always open to sugestions.

Next years Grand Canyon expedition I swear I'll learn to fly fish before hand and give that a try........

So much water..............so little time!
Thanks again!
