First rod in progress, under wraps completed. Question, would you recommend using color sealant on the under wraps before continuing? If so why? wraps are NCP. Plan on using a high build over NCP for the over wraps also.

Thks, and Happy New Year to all!

Hi,

Much success with your first custom rod. You will get mucho pleasure catching fish on a rod you designed and crafted.

If the underwrap is a light color thread, white, yellow etc, a coat of color sealer/preserver is needed especially on a black blank. The darker colored threat you can get away without the color sealer.

By sealing in between wraps you create a seal. When you have to replace a guide it will be easier to take off just the top wrap.

Sealer is usually water solvent. If any sealer is left on the blank next to a wrap and is not covered with epoxy then water will get under the wrap. Always wipe the blank ends of wraps off with denatured alcohol before installing the last coat of epoxy.

Thks for the info, Capt. One more question at least for this year anyway! LOA When applying the wraps to the guide feet is there a certain direction one should follow, like from the blank up onto the guide foot or from the guide down to the blank.

Have a great New Year

Hi,

Wrapping from the blank up the guide foot is the norm. This way the thread packs tighter.

We also grind the top of the guide feet down to remove excess material. Thene smoothe the feet with a burnishing wheel for the smoothest ramp.

Happy New Year!
