I always do. I think that it is harder to get finish between the guide feet if you don't make sure that it is covered before the guides go on. It also protects the thread from the guide feet and get the finish in good contact with the blank. The only time that I don't think I would do it is on a thin blank at the tip if I don't want to afftect the action that much.
