I usually only fished during the summer months, and only recently have I tried cold weather fishing. I really enjoy it, however, I have no idea on the type of outer gear (clothing) I need to get. I have read the previous post on how to keep warm which was very informative and have been implementing those tips. However, I would like to know about the waterproof pants, jacket, boots and gloves, etc.? What brand or type should I be looking for?

Any ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Gloves

JaeC,
I don't claim to be an expert on foul weather gear - I got a set from West Marine for about $120 several years ago and it seems fine. I'm sure you'll get info from guys who wear Hellys or Grunden or whatever. One thing I can say for sure - DON"T GO CHEAP. Third-rate gear will let you down when you most need it.
GLOVES - I think the new neoprene gloves are just great - they're thin enough that you can feel things real well, they're waterproof and they're almost totally coldproof. I'll wear Thermax or the like when it's just cool, but when old Jack Frost turns mean, the neoprenes go on. Good luck with your efforts - it's good to see someone who doesn't just wanna be a fair-weather dabbler in fishing.

Layers is the best

Well there are many opinions here and the best is what works for your self.
I personally like to use layers I go with the tee shirt then,a thermo wickers top , then a spyder ski turtle neck the new space age stuff is great it cost me like 100 bucks but the thing is great get it in a ski shop. Next a heavy sweat shirt. Then I went to walmart and got a on sale remington camo water proof jacket for like 59.00 bucks and it is awsome never got wet inside yet Zip out liner for hotter days. The bottoms is a pair of ski thermo's then sweat pants and Grundens heavy duty only skins that hold up! Next a good thermo gortex hat cannot be beat and it keeps you warm. Next boots. In the sportsmenguide catalog they have the canadian sport boots the long green ones with double insulation cannot be beat I'll post the link when i find them Stay warm:)

You should look at the Patagonia website, i have a fleece hat from them that is very warm, and has a flap that covers your ears which is a plus. its the best hat i have. For gloves, the best ones i have found i got up in MA at a commercial fishing store <http://www.newenglandmarine.com/> and they are made by a company called Atlas i think. they are blue, waterproof, and have a liner. best of all they are very very flexible. great gloves for cod fishing! for thermals just go to any ski store and they will set you up, but the good stuff is not cheap!
Also if you are going to be fishing a lot over the winter you should look into the waterproof fleece pullover Grundens makes. it has waterproof sleeves and stomach area, and neoprene cuffs to keep the water out. it will run you around $70 or so.

JaeC505, their are a number of shops that sell winter fishing gear, but one of the finest just happens to be here in Sheepshead Bay. Stella Maris, which is just at the eastern end of the party boat docks, has a complete line of top notch hats, gloves, pullovers, and skins that the commercial pinhookers in this area use. Joe, Richie and the crew there, will help you choose the right outfit for you to stay warm when fishing in the winter.

Grundens never impressed me when I found out about products from Guy Cotten. They have a complete web site, but their products are harder to find around LI. Definately worth the search. This is what the guys in Alaska wear. They have a zipper front fleece with rubber sleeves and hood that absolutely blows away anything from Grundens. Worth checking out...

Hey guys,
I second the grundens pullover, those things are GREAT! They keep you very warm and also protect from wind and wetness, and are pretty light. Also, my favorite boots are called XTRA-TUF's. I got them in Homer, AK over the summer, and are generally what everybody in Alaska wears. They are neoprene and fully insulated. Here is a website that sells and ships them:

Don't know?

funny the last pair i bought showed a black sole but when i got them they were the sole like a work boot color. I love these boots. had the vikings, helly's and these thing are incredible
the name of the boot is Kamik from Canada. If you order them call and ask them for the green boot with the rubber soel in work boot type just like the timberland or dunham boot sole.
