cod tackle

it depends on where you are fishing for cod. but an all around setup is a penn 4/0 spooled with 50 to 60 lb test. i have been using a braided dacron in 40 lb and it works great, no strech. put that on a heavy duty 7 to 8 foot rod. bring along some heavy sinkers and some 7/0 hooks. Still some good cod fishing up here in the northeast. when i moved from LI ten years ago it was downfalling there.

FlukeGuy... a good setup would be a 7 and 1/2 foot rod rated 30-60 with a MB (mooching blank) action-slow taper.... add fuji sic guides and fuji reel seat and you are set as far as a rod. For reels, a penn 225ld, newell 332 3.6 for shallow water, or a Pacifica (GR series now) 3500 or all aluminum PG 454 with 50-65 power pro and you should be set.

every year my brother says.....I'm dying to go cod fishing...my response is normally...see you soon jackass! as far as tackle, you can buy 30$ worth of sinkers, swivels and hooks, go out into the deep sea and freze your nuts off, or you can take you $30 and sit in McQuades in Freeport and put it on the bar and wait for thre boat to return from the trip you were thinking about going on. either way, you'll spend the 30 bucks but in the bar, you'll be warm and least catching a buzz. afterall, there are no codfish within 100 miles of Long Island.....well Freeport for that matter!

Cod Tackle

Flukeguy, are you planning to do offshore trips on party boats like the helen h and viking starship? Just wondering because you might want different tackle on a party boat than on a private boat. On a party boat, it depends how much money you are willing to spend and whether you think you will be jigging or bait fishing. For example, cod setup cost $400 (custom jigging rod and gr3500 pro gear reel), and I'm sure some people have spent much more than that. For a jigging stick, nothing really beats a custom rod butif you are just starting off, there are some off the shelf rods that would get the job done. Two of these are the ugly stick bwb1120 and ugly stick custom uscb1180xh. The first rod is rated for 40-80lb and is eight feet and the second rod is rated for 40-50 lb and is also eight feet. Both are good jigging rods and relatively inexpensive ($60-90), although the bwb1120 is cheaper by about $20 than the uscb1180xh. One thing about these rods is that their tips are crap, so I would recommend getting their tips replaced with a heavy duty fuji tip, probably about sixteen dollars. Any tackle shop that builds rods can do this for you in about five minutes. There are many choices for bait rods, one of which is the ugly stick bwb1140, a six foot stick which is nice and light. However, I would also recommend replacing the tip on this rod. It costs about $60. As for reels, the pro gears are the best (my opinion), but the newells are cheaper, light, and not far behind. I am not sure about which models are best, as I don't know much about newells, but one will probably cost about $160 or so. If you get a newell, you might want to replace the handle with a more heavy duty one, as those handles have been known to break. The old standby for codfishermen has been the penn 113h, and although this reel is heavier, it is cheaper ($100) and works well without any modifications, which are needed with both newells and pro gears. The best line is either cortland spectron or power pro in 50-80lb test. As others have said, this line is ultra sensitive and has a much smaller diameter proportionately than its mono counterparts, allowing you to use lighter sinkers and jigs.
Good luck.

Helen-H does Maine whalewatching during the brief New England summer. They fish out of Hyannis, MA for most of the rest of the year. They do more offshore cod trips than any other single partyboat.

Bait fishing cod? Any setup that handles 30-50# line and 16oz sinkers should work if you are fishing somewhere productive. When you get a double of steakers, they can get hard to reel in, but isn't that part of the fun? They jump on and you reel them in. It can be really straightforward. When fishing is bad, the tackle makes more of a difference, but without the experience, you won't be able to compete anyway.
