Is it too late in the season to try this during daytime in back bay, or (groan) the bridges, from Amity to Meadowbrook area (inshore?)

maybe some but wait for fall

The water is above 70 deg. you will find some fish early in the morning or late in the evening. the bigger fish will come into the bays when the temps cool down and bait washes out of the cuts. But in general now you will see schoolies running the bottom eating all in there pathes.

you'll still get them in those areas,we had a few tuesday to 34".It is beter in mid may but I get them through out the summer.
