I would have to say that i am in the midst of changing everything over!

The guys i fish with love the owner super mutus!

they are awesome but just to big even though they have been working and have had no issues with them at all.

But i am going to be changing over to the eagle claw laser sharps..

6/0 - 9/0 depending on size of fish!

They have a 500lb breaking point with to me is all you need..

Super mutus are somewhere up around if not over 1000lbs breaking point.

Also the laser sharps are so nice and lite that they just float down like there is nothing on the line but you butter, sardine or squid!

OH AND ALL CIRCLES!!

Would not even think about using a J hook style for anything other than trolling anymore.. and soon moving to all circles for trolling also!

Circles

I have switched over to all circles except for the pre-rigged trolling setups that I have. Even for shark fishing. To be honest, as for the brand of chunking hooks, I have been using the no-name hooks that JB tackle has, and with good luck. No breaks, no bends. I spend the extra $$ on better hooks for my trolling and rigging hooks. Just my two cents.

We have been using all circles for 6 years now. I prefer the Mustad which I put a slight offset in on a bench vice, then sharpen them up. For a while I was using the red Gamagatsu and Owner as well, but I found that the hookup ratio was the same, they just cost more.

Gammi HD live bait hooks for the butterfish and sardine baits. Mustad or Eagle Claw circle hooks for whole squid baits, 8/0 and up....big squids get set deeper with larger circle hook for swords. 8/0 to 9/0 for tuna in the chunk line when using store bought frozen squid baits.

I made a mistake, the red circle hooks I have used are Daiichi, they work very well. Anybody have more input on swords & circles? I'm thinking Owner Mutu for them. In the past we have only used J hooks, Mustad 7698B, with very high hookup ratio.

I don't have personal experiance but the sharpies I've been talking almost exclusively use J hooks for swords. The thinking is they have soft mouths and a hookset just in the corner has a greater possibility of pulling during a prolonged fight.

I have used the Owner offshore J hooks in the past with little complaint, but from those who switched over to using something like the super mutu, i have heard that they bring fish in much better. Getting the fish in the corner of the jaw gives you many advantages. It puts the fish into doing circles sooner and you can horse the fish around at the boat a bit more if the occasion makes it necessary. I would definitely go with the Owner super mutu since its short shank and thick hook make it perfect for rigging a dead bait to not spin.
