Hey Great1,
I use two methods when surf fishing. I have two poles thus it makes it easier. The one pole is a simple bait rod, I cast out a nice fat chunk of bunker, herring, clam, and let it sit out there till I get a hit or 10 minutes (Whichever comes first).
The second rod, I either use to plug or jig with, or it will have a eel on the end.
I was told recently to always use a fishfinder rig, because sometimes fish can be finicky, especially since I'm usually using 4-6oz of lead to hold bottom. On the north shore I use 1-2oz, and usually won't use a fishfinder.
IMO, it all has to do with preference... It's always handy to have two rods though if you can. Sometimes just sitting there waiting for a pole to get hit gets mighty boring....
