Nivekelly,
Definately conventional. If you're using mono line and targeting bass just slip on a fishfinder and snell the hook right to the line. If your using braided line add a 6ft leader of about 50lb test and snell the hook to that, after you put the fish finder on. If you're after blues you'll need about six inches of wire between the line or leader and the hook.

My setup is a medium heavy conventional rod with a 525 mag reel spooled with 25lb test line. I slip on a fishfinder tie a barrel swivel to the line and attatch a 2 or 3 foot leader of 40lb flourocarbon snelled to a 7/0 gami circle hook. I don't use wire because both the local charter boat captains and myself have noticed that with the circle hooking getting the fish in the lip and not deep there are no cutoffs from bluefish and there is no wire to turn the bass off.

Nivekelly,

If you are planning to "chunk"… definitely use a conventional outfit!
Like MakoMike and Fencer04 said… Use heavy mono leader for bass and you should try the circle hooks!

Personally, If I am targeting bass in a sandy / pebbled (non-sticky) areas… I use 40-lbs. fluorocarbon leader. In a "structural" environment, I use 60-lbs. test!

In the event I am targeting big chopper blues… I also like a "short" (4"-6")wire leader!

SeaJay and CaptainAnt also mentioned the word "chum". I could not agree more because chum is a sure way to know if the fish are around!

Regarding chum... How do you chum and how do you know when you are overchuming?

My technique was to scoop two or three ladels full of chum into a five gallon bucket. This produces chum that is somewhat more watery than the chum that I've seen used on party boats. With this consistency I would throw another ladlefull over as soon as the previous was about 25 feet from the boat.

My ladle is bigger than typical. I cut off the bottom five inches of a 2 liter plastic soda bottle and nailed it to a dowel rod.
