Recently fished with a buddy out of Islamorada. We were fishing on one of the party boat fishing for Yellowtail. Others on the boat were picking away slowly. However my buddy and I were using chum balls and had fish on every cast. Thinking of using this technique locally for Blues, stripers and Tuna. Has anyone tried this on the east coast. What would you say is the best recipe for making these chum balls?

Hey MV........

That's one of the old technics the cubans used down there in the Keys.

When I lived in KW there for awhile, that is what we did too.

Did you use the sand method?

This was the way we did it down there.

Chum balls

I was just in Islamorada this week and yes we have used chumballs for years.
I don't know if it would work well for striper's but heres how I would make it here. I would mix chopped clam -clam chum, oats, sand and some chopped killies or any other small baitfish. You might need a little fish oil to help hold the ball's together. Make the balls about the size of a tennis ball and toss one upcurrent about every 3-5 minutes and see if you get the bite going!

Chum Bomb

Funny the balls work ok but we kinda of had an idea which works great. We took a piece of 2" PVC pipe and cut it in half and useed a plate on the bottom to attach both side. Then we take a rod add weight on the bottom and bend a hook on the top to attach a line. Now when you pull up on the hook the side close from the pressure. But when you let it slack the sides pop open which is how the chum releases. It works great because you could get the chum to the bottom where you are fishing. not down current of it.
