I've wanted to upgrade the reel on my Hopper rod since last year. Currently it has an older 4/0 Penn, and the wealth of info on this site is both a blessing and a curse for someone looking to narrrow down his options. Basically I am looking to spend no more than about $200 I am only a once a year, tuna from a head boat, fisherman but I really have enjoyed jigging tuna on my trips and have had much success. So I was thinking of getting one of the black Saltist 50's. Is that too big? Is this my best choice? For once-a-year use do I really need to change our the drag washers? Also was looking on Charkbait and there is a Diawa sealine thats cheaper but has high gear ratio and seems like maybe too high for tuna jigging, maybe better for cod which I don't do. Is there a better option? maybe I should just upgrade the drag on my Penns and change the handles ? They are just so heavy and awkward. Wondering what you guy's that have or at least have actually seen these reels opinions are. Only place to see these reels in Central NY is online.

Thanks in advance

Tom

TomIf you fish only once a year, you don't have to invest in tuna jigging and you can use what you have as many mates still use Penn 4/0 for tuna. Saltist 50 is not big, but I feel Salstist 40 with lower gear is better just for tuna jigging.
I highly recommend to replace drag washers to Carnontex as it cost only $20.

It would actually be my father's day gift. I was just concerned about line capacity. Ordinarily I would just go turn the handle on a new reel but up here there's no place to do that. I didn't realize there was a new(to me) reel forum as I've been away from this site for a while. Guess I should have posted there. I apologize for asking what must be a mundane qustion by now. Do you know, is the black saltist the same as the silver? and do they come in 40? doesn't really matter I just like the color

The chance of getting spooled on Saltist 40 is 1000 : 1. :)
If it happens, you'll remember it for the rest of your life.

good point.... but Kil I've only been five times at this rate I'll remember all of my trips the rest of my life.:) You must get so sick of answering the same questions over and over. the price you pay for being the foremost authority I guess :)

go with a saltist you can get it new on ebay for cheap or some sponsor or charkbait. the money you save you can get the carbontex drags-well worth it and allows you to get more drag that you can stock in case you get a bigger fish. since you are a right there are so many good reels to choose from but a good reel is the saltist. like the others mentioned, go with the more torque, go with the 4.9 ratio.

I hear ya but no, nobody I know or at least live near does any kind of saltwater fishing. I have lots of Diawa products I feel comfortable buying them unseen. Sure would be nice to turn a bunch of different handles though, don't worry I'm always getting yelled at for fondling someones reel, do it with guns all the time too!
