I need to come up with a good 600+ ft of 1/2 anchor line for this season. It's for a 21 ft aluminum boat, and will rarely be used. I can do my own splices & come up with a chain rode. All the mass produced lengths of three strand nylon (economy & premium) I see are 250 ft or under, anything longer requires a special order. I've poked around hardware stores, but most just want to sell by the foot. Does anyone know or have ideas as to where I can buy it at a reasonable price, preferably sold as plain rope in one bulk role? Worst senario, I'll use a couple lengths, but I'd like avoid having knots/splices. Thanks for any/all responses,

try one of the local commercial fishing supply houses or lobster pot builders.
they all carry rope.
its also cheaper when you buy by the spool, which for 3/8 or 1/2 is 600 feet.

also i suggest you consider 3/8 rope instead of 1/2 for your application.

you dont need 1/2 for your boat size and it adds considerably more drag in the water when anchoring in strong current, and will work against you.

3/8 is easy to handle when pulling by hand as well. and you can store 600 feet in a orange bushel basket.

leakyrivot , I've got 600' of 1/2 premium line . It was used one season and is marked at 50 intervals . the splice is done at the head and ready to go . This line I will not need anymore and does not get twisted up like the cheaper line do , it lays real nice . If your interested let me know we can talk . Its still on the boat you can come by and get it when I open the boat up in a month or so . It cost me around $220 at West Marine last year .

Wow.. thanks again, you guys are the balls.. I'm sorting through this, will let you know how it goes. This sounds funny, but I don't have the time at the moment, need to wait until tomorrow at work to surf though it.

MikeTuna: Keeping you in mind, it looks like the top # I'll need to spend is about $150.. not sure if I need 1/2 now - the currently line in the boat is 3/8, but I figured with the extra length, the stretch might a bit much. The stretch might be nice though.. anyone have .02 on this?

You guys could aslo try Consumer Marine, in Wall New Jersey. I got their catalogue and order a shot of 600 foot 3/8's anchor line (nylon threestrand twisted) for 69.99. Cheapest I've ever seen, anywhere.

In your case leaky rivot, I'd talk to Mike Tuna and see if I could cut a deal. West Marine has excellent quality rope, New England Line! I have some on the boat as utilitarian line and love it. Lays nice and is great on the hands. The Stuff from consumer, well I guess I'll see with this upcomming season.

Leaky,
You absolutely don't have to go over 3/8" for your boat. The extra stretch is usually an asset, and its way more than strong enough. I've always bought Columbian rope and never regretted it - usually from Defender. Good luck.

Boatfix has a couple nylon 3/8 ropes & has a 600 ft spool of 1/2 on sale. The 3/8's are as cheap as $70 for 500-600 ft. The "SEACHOICE 3-STRAND TWISTED NYLON ROPE 1/2" X 600' White" was $120.

Wellington looks good, but either doesn't post prices or doesn't sell retail. Gave up there.

Ebay worries me, I've heard too many horror stories about it. Thanks for the idea though.

I've got a catologe coming from freeport.

Looking into Hamilton & Defender currently.

Thanks guys, will let you know how it works out.

I would certainly cut a deal with anyone on the rope I have now .
I bought different line years back for around $130 for 600' of 1/2" after using it for a season I ended up cutting it up . It twisted so bad all the time getting it in and out of the rope locker was a nightmare . It just wasn't worth the headacks .

So watch out for the real bargins . Check it out first .

Defender is about $100, Hamilton is about $114.

Couldn't find consumer marine online.

www.memphisnet.net has some type of nylon 3/8 for $80, but it doesn't appear to be 3 strand - some type of smaller braid.

Need to poke at one local shop on the way home today, all set one way or another though.

do not shop by price alone,
there are vast differences in the lines.

if you only occasionally anchor your boat, then any line you choose will be fine.
if you are a bottom fisherman and anchoring is a daily activity,
then your choice in rope matters.

the lower quality ropes do not coil well, they do not last as long and have a tendency to twist.

i will second the reccomendation made by gradysailfish about the New England Line.
i have used and ABUSED this line for years and i love its performance.
i have 0 complaints about this line,
and according to some i complain about a lot ;)

check out the west marine link,
you want White 3-Strand Nylon, 3/8''
its lists in the catalog for 39 cents a foot, so a spool of 600 feet would cost $234.00, yes it is pricey for anchor rope but it is worth it.

HOLD ON, through special arrangements made by megalodon, you can get a incredible deal on this rope.
if you purchase a complete spool of 600 feet, you can purchase it for 20 cents a foot ! $120 for 600 feet.
now that real deal !!

WEST MARINE

if you want the rope,
call 1-800-262-8464 ask for MELISSA in CUSTOMER SERVICE.
tell her you want to purchase the 600 foot spool and she will arrange the discount.
you can have the spool delivered to your local store, or sent to your home by ups.

hope this helps.

by the way,
this is not really a special deal just for friends of megalodon, ;)
i happen to be aware of how west marine pricing policies work, and where and how they will apply substantial discounts to specific products.
the discounts are available to anybody. :)

I'll second the new england rope as being great stuff. West marine is way pricey however in my experience. For you 21' defineately go with 3/8.

Bought a spool of 7/16 ( the perfect compromise between 3/8 and 1/2 for my 25') from Consumers Marine for $ 118.

Having used it all of last fall while togging, I would not hesitate to recommend this rope to anyone. For the price you can't go wrong. Free shipping, make a phone call and the rope will be at your doorstep the next day.
