CCA calls for fisheries allocation based on economics

OBS wrote:
The Coastal Conservation Association (CCA), a nationwide organization representing recreational fishermen, interprets federal fisheries law to say that allocations "must be fair and equitable to all fishermen - not the public at large or the national interest."Commercial fishermen, on the other hand, turn to that same law, the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, and note that optimum yield from a sustainable fishery should "provide the greatest overall benefit to the Nation" in respect to food production as well as recreation......

The CCA believes resource allocation should be based on a comparison of the economic value of recreational fishing and that of commercial fishing.

Calculating that the recreational summer flounder fishery contributes more than eight times the value of commercial fishing to the economy, the group believes the current allocation system is not the best.

Every once in a while, CCA comes up w/ a good concept on its own. This is not one of them. did they hire Johnny Cochran into their Research and Development Department?

Like standing in line for releif checks, and the gov says they decided not to issue them. So you turn to the guy next to you, kick him in the nuts, and steal his wallet.

ZThey need a cost/benefit analysis. How much would the economic benefit of recreational fishing be if the recreational quota was increased or decreased, same for commercial fishing. The result should come out as the classic bell curve for recreational fishing. At some point (and I'd guess that we are well past that point) adding an additional fish to the recreational quota will not add a lot of economic activity from that sector. OTOH the commercial sector would be flatter, since adding a fish will always increase the economic activity from that sector, sinc ethe fish is sold.

Maybe too deep an economic argument for the cca (after all they are just fishermen
) to understand.
