I think when it comes to striped bass not getting wiped out---- AGAIN!! There is no gray area: there ars smoking guns.. when there is a dollar on the head of a striper they will get wiped out..history has proven this.. nets must be kept off these sacred fish and there needs to be more enforcement.

Take Licenses and boats away from repeat offenders.

Do actually believe more Bass are killed by nets than rod n reel? That would be a sad testament. Do you also believe more bass make it into restaurants by net then by rod n reel? THAT would be Ludacris. More people then you think sell their catch to "pay for fuel" Take away 2 a day on for hire boats, take away the stupid "over 40" second fish and you could solve half your perceived problem . And by the way calling them "a sacred" fish takes away most, if not all of your credibility. They are just a fish, manage them across the board, punish all violators. Most Noreast readers are too smart to take sides. Most high end restaurants in Manhattan would not share your views by the way............Sacred---wtf is this world coming to?

I don't think so Willy, he probably is alluding to the numerous (thousands?) of bass dragged onto the beach before being released , there have been a lot of photos posted on this site of bass that have been rolling in the sand before being released.How many of these poorly handled fish survive? If I misunderstood Sargent Slaughter's post, I'm sure he will correct it.

Sand suspended in the water is harmless [fish can leave an area when it's not to their liking] dragging a fish on his side scouring the body slime away is quite different. Loss of slime can lead to infection and eventual death. To say that "sand is sand" shows a lack of knowledge.

sand suspended in rapidly moving turbulent water passing over a charging basses Gills is certainly not the same as rolling and pulling a bass through sand on the beach.

and sand is not really always sand
SiO = sand
SiO2 = sand
Ce,La,Nd,Th)PO4 = sand

but more on point while the local sand on the beach is the same as that suspended in the water in the surf chemically , it effects are not the same.

1st off one occurs naturally ,bass feeding in sand laden water ( nature has accounted for this)
2 dragging a fish up the beach scrapping its protective layer off and packing its gills with sand and then fingers is absolutely unnatural.

So to refute your very comical statement

sand is not always the same and doesn't always have the same effect on the sacred COW

You cannot move a large fish on the sand without the help of a wave, using a rod and reel.

BTW - I bet 1000% more bass are killed by rod and reel than by nets every year. Of course we can never prove any of this. But the recreational landings themselves far surpass the commercial every year. This recorded data alone, you know, the data they use to set the quotas? Proves this beyond a shadow of a doubt. Should just make it illegal to target them for sport. Thats kind of mean anyway. If there were no sport fishery , then we would have all the bass you could ever want. See how stupid one sided arguments can be? The are a resource, not a sacred cow. People caught them to eat way before they caught them for fun.
