Caught a fluke today that had a loop of 50lb line tied throught both sides of the fish and tied in a loop. It looked like it was tyhere a while but is this the attach the balloon to the fish to find the school trick? It was just something odd so i decided to post it here.

I actually caught a fluke a couple of years ago by the ruins next to Gardiners Island that had the same thing. The line went in one side and out the other only once, not twice like that fish.

I cut the line pretty close to the body of the fish on both sides instead of pulling the line completely out.

I've caught fluke like that. I believe it was grown in. Meaning a fluke got caught ina loop of line and grew around it. I cut mine and found scar tissue where the fish grew around the loop.

I've heard stories from old timers that they used to do that to flounder (tie line with a balloon attached) and then release it to see where it "schools up" then fish that area.
Doesnt sound very sporty to me

Never did it with flatfish, as they don't seem to school as much as other fish. I have done it with blues and macks and it can be effective.
