With the rising costs of bait and all other things associated with a day on the water I was wondering who out there takes the time to catch thier own bait.I try to catch as much of my own as possible.Fishing for herring in the winter,vaccum sealing them for later use.Throwing a cast net at the dock for bunker the night before a shark trip.I keep an eel pot under the boat in the fall during the striper run.All of this has saved me a ton of dough that I can spend on other things like that second six pack.

I have a bait ben - 5 'x 3'- I can hold alot of bunker...... when they die I throw them in the freezer whole in 5 gallon buckets to either grind up for shark chum or use to chunk when there is no bait around. Never thought of as saving money though- sometime it costs me more money in fuel to find the bait, but that is the only way I catch good size bass. I also load up on peanuts for fluke and freeze them tuna chunking- they glisten great on the way down.......

I don't go looking for the bait I wait for it to come to me.The night before a shark trip I go down to the boat and throw a cast net for bunker.They are always there and I usually net 40-50 large ones and fill like 2, 5 gallon buckets of peanuts to grind up on the boat.At $2.50 a pop for fresh bunker thats alot of money.

fishon what kind of bait do u use for the eelpot, and what kind of habitat do eels like?

Hey gebby when I was a kid (some years back) I use to work the bay and some eeling we use to use horseshoe crab cut in half or quarters depnds on pot size.I remember leveing a keely trap in over night with just bread in it and fiending what we/I called shoe string eels(baby eels) in it rite at the dock.As for habitat sandy,rocky,murky,muddy just about all but I think the best mud&seaweed.

Just like bayrat said,horshoe crab makes for the best bait.I keep two of the eel pots that look like long killie traps right at the dock sitting on bottom.Ground is pretty muddy by the boat.
