Cabelas has a cast net thrower on sale in the bargain cave. I had difficulty throwing nets but with this it is as easy as throwing a frisbee. It is a green round piece of plastic that costs under ten bucks.

Both of those are good nets. I would get the one that has the most weight per foot.

I know some folks don't like to hear this, but there is a looong thread on those two castnets in the archives as well as a thread on a group buy we had last year. Lots of good info in those old threads.

I was a comedy routine last fall trying to throw my net for the first time in a year!
I swear I must have looked like a complete fool ( not hard to do at times:) ) trying to cast to peanuts that were **** near at my feet.

Back home I practiced and it came back to me but I still stink at it.
A better net might help as the one I have is a Sports Authority special

Haa,haa.haa.....Very true Mike.;)

Cracker and Calusa are two of the better brands of nets. You cant go wrong with them. Gil (Aquaholic) taught me how to throw. Since he's lefty and I'm righty, I learned both ways. (huge plus when your chasin bait on the otherside of the boat). Anyway, he recommended the Cracker, so I looked them up and went with the next step up and got a Calusa. They are made by the same company. One has better features than the other. I use a 10' rad 3/8" mesh for the nuts, and a 10' 1 1/4" mesh for the adults. I bought mine based on his recommendation and it's work well for me.

The only thing I would mention is that it's easier to throw an 8' net then a 10'. The 8 weighs less. Sometimes it's better to learn on a smaller net then sell it and up grade the size.

Casting

I learned from Gil at a seminar last year.
I also watched the Calusa Video dozens of times.
I still stink at throwing...

You see, the boat is always moving. It's very hard to line up, get ready, and throw without missing the bait. I catch some, but I've had people on the boat that net HUNDREDS in ONE THROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll keep practicing, but it's easier (for me, anyway) to jig for bait later in the season. Netting is also VERY MESSY!

On the other hand, any "Spearing" net is very simple to use. I get TONS of Silver Sides (to use for Fluke and Sea Bass) with a small can of cat food tied onto the net (otherwise, the bait will float away).

Good Luck!

Im looking for a cast net for bunker. I was looking into a Cracker or Calusa, does anyone have any opions pro/con about these nets. Is one easier to throw than the other?

Cracker and Calusa are made by the same company, Calusa is more money and throws better. Last year I bought the Cracker 10' with 1 1/4" mesh, it threw well and I was able to net adult bunker in about 15' of water. The guy I talked to at Calusa said he just came out with a Calusa 10' with a 1 1/2" mesh, I wish I had bought that one.

8 foot 3/4 inch mesh. I think it is 1.25 lb per foot on the net. Possibly only 1 lb per foot not sure exactly.

It is simple to throw. The only thing I did was sand down the handle on the thrower to take off the edges. Works great and only took 2 practice throws to get it right.

The bigger the the "frisbee" looking thing get, the harder it is to throw them. They are great for the small ones for small school of bait fish, but I would not recomend em for bunker.
I have both a CAl USA, Cracker and a WestCoast nets. They are all great nets, but out of them, the Cal USA is the best.

Here's a real easy to learn way to cast a net...the first vid.

Castinets

I have a 10 foot Betts and a 6 foot no-name net. The 10 works better because the material is so much easier to deal with. The 10 foot gathers up easier (smaller) in the hand than the 6 footer does.

The 10 foot net material is also less stiff and it unfolds easier.

I bought the CD/video from Capitol Tackle in NYC. It is very informative and I am able to get good throws going.

It's funny when you are wrestling with it, trying to get it set up just right for a throw and you get it to open up so/so, oh yeah, and your back is killing you from the weight after a while. ...Then some guy who looks like he's not into it says 'lemme try', and he opens it up like a pro!! I've seen one armed throws from some people come out great. Amazing what you can learn.

vsk
