I am new to the cast net scene and wanted to get some helpful data on what to use to catch bunker, both adult and peanuts. I have been using a 3/8" fitech net 8 footer and have not been very successful with it. It works great on mullet in the surf and I can throw it fine but I don't think it sinks fast enough. I have been using it in 5-8 foot of water. Should I go larger on the web or more weight or both. Any help would be great!

Use the search function at the top of the page. We had a big discussion about cast nets last year. I don't recall what the reccomendations were for each species, but there were recomendations in the thread.

I have a 20 footer I think 1/2" that I catch peanuts at the harbor in. Sometimes one throw will supply me with a weeks worth of peanuts for fluking/bassing or chum.

I heard its illegal now to throw 20 footers in NY without some sort of license. Can anyone confirm this?

That mesh is too small for bunker. You want something bigger than that.
Umm... we are talking adult and not peanuts right? I would do a search like suggested and see the guy(sorry I forget his name) in Staten island. H.J. told me about this guy years ago and he makes great nets for bunker.

Also, in NY you are allowed up to 10' horn to weight.

You can snag all the bunkers you want, But once you throw a net 3 foot or 20 foot it is commercial. You would need a NYS bait permit which you can get at the DEC office in E.Setauket.It costs 50$ a year.
Last year the DEC was giving summons to the guys on the local peirs for throwing cast nets without a bait permit.Just a heads up:rolleyes:

10' radius = 20' diameter = legal limit for cast net

No license needed to use a cast net, up to 20' in diameter, 10' radius, to catch bunker recreationally for bait.

I just purchased a cast net from Percy Wentworth on Staten Island. They are custom made and well worth the money. Percy is a very nice guy and will sell you the net suitable for the bait you pursue. Also, he will not let you leave his house until you are comfortable throwing the net. His website is percycastnets.com.
