Just got back from an offshore cod trip on the Yankee Capts. out of Gloucester. Tons of cod, pollack and cusk with a few wolf fish, haddock and monkfish mixed in. I've never seen so many huge cod and pollock on one trip. Pool fish was a cod in the 40+ pound range with many over 30 pounds. The pollack ran over twenty pounds and there were dozens in that size range. Double headers all day long. Jigs and teasers did the trick. Three mates started filleting fish at 3:30 in the afternoon and were not finished until 1:00 a.m. In fact, the captain had us drifting around the mouth of Gloucester harbor for 3 hours just to let the mates finish before docking. The sea was dead calm and the whales put on quite a display at several spots. If you like codfishing you have got to get in on one of these trips. Just make sure your tackle is up to the task. Quite a few large fish were lost and I personally had my 60 pound test leader torn apart by what I assume was a double header of huge pollock as the hook up occured thirty turns off the bottom while I was reeling in to take a break. Every conceivable jig and teaser used caught fish.
