You forgot what you were going to ask me, didn't you?

Nah, I had to try to sell something this year, going into a smelly old Pulp Mill - carrying my escape respirator...fun place..

I wanted to get your take on a blank that I want to use for jigging. I am planning to get a Saltist and load it with braid to jig for BFT up here in the gulf. Any reccomends on a blank?

BTW, do like the Saltist, especially if you change the bearings and put the smooth drag in..?

Whose knows if even I will have time to jig...my buddies rather troll..

BTW, it is dead without the king and a few others...kinda depressing..

Plus I have not seen you posting and I am one of the few than can appreciate your Satire, sardonic comments and wit...

Thanks

Last thing first, yes, drags and bearings from Smooth Drag are a must for serious fish. As far as blank selection goes, on a private boat you'll want something in 6'-6'6" range. If pay homage to the King, he'll hook you up with a 6'6" version of the GUSA Predator or a Dragon. Pred is good for 60lb, Dragon for 80lb. The latter is a very harsh blank, you need to be in shape for it. Not knowing the size of BFT you are going to connect with, I'd err on the side of ballsier gear. If the idea of being in shape offends you to the very core, the heaviest Hopper rod blank is very easy on the angler, and it's easy on the wallet, too. Last but not least, a Calstar GF7465ML is another great option, it's not the lightest nor the cheapest, but will get the job done with either 60lb or 80lb topshot.

Thanks,

Never heard of hopper blanks.. I'll look at those blanks...but I will probably opt for the King's..I have a Cobalt Blue mega that I still need to wrap..

To be honest, I am going to try to target the smaller BFT, but that does not mean I wouldn't throw a jig to a bigger pod...

I may even jig when we are sharking as I see the streaks across the sounder so I know they are there..

I had another question, but my daughter just threw up on the couch and after I just cleaned it up, I forgot what it was...

Speaking of - he's got some new stock. URC60-3 is probably exactly what you're looking for, but I can't speak for it, as I haven't seen one in person. Very few people on this continent had, so far.

The Hopper rods are taking FL by storm. They have traditional Japanese jigging rod action - meaning slow. On the flip side, they are pretty much indestructable, as far as I can tell. Unlike the despised Trevallas and various beneath contempt knock-offs, these are glass over graphite composites right through the tip. The cross section at butt and tip looks just like a Loomis Pelagic blank. They are available here. Pretty low rent, but you get raped on shipping. Don't trust the silly line ratings - 4E-HOPC600 is a 60lb-80lb blank.

Thanks, I have been in contact with the "banned one". The URC60-3 looks like the ticket.

I finally remembered my other question...Do you only use the Shimano Butterfly jigs or have you tried the "knock-offs"..?

I was wondering if there was a difference in your esteemed mind.

thanks

I resemble that remark.

Other way around, dude. I've never bought, owned, or fished a Shimano terminal tackle product. Nor do I ever intend to, for a host of ethical and practical reasons.

I wouldn't call the jigs that I usually rely on "knock-offs", as they have been around longer than the Flutterbys. River2Sea makes a good product, for one. If I were going to jig BFT in GOM, I'd take a loook at the Aji jig, which is shaped more like a bunker. I caught my biggest jigged YFT last season on one of those. Some 150gm models are still available on sale here. If the fish are on the northern halfbeaks, something like a 6oz Luhr Jensen Deep Stinger should work. These also look good, but I haven't fished them yet, so I can't promise that they will produce.

Ok Dude...ah excuse MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE

I was refering to the Merrick tackle rigs..here

I know the guys up here use the Deadly Dicks (no pun intended) for casting to smaller BFT when they are on the halfbeaks..

Yea, I have never owned anything from Shimano either...but I have no ethics so if they had something neat, I would use it..

Ah, those. Steve the eBay jig guy sells tons of these nameless Chinese made knife jigs. I had good luck fishing them in the Pacific for pretty much everything, and the 200gm model worked great for cod on Stellwagen when they were chasing sandeels. I haven't tried them for canyon tuna, as they don't really match the hatch there. The smaller sizes will probably work for BFT as well as any other halfbeak immitation, but I would want something more reflective for day time fishing.
