Ive done it ... if you get 3 fish on at once it gets a bit crazy figureing out whos gonna gaff the first fish up but other than that its more work for a small crew Plus with todays gas prices it could get costly

I've done it on a 31'Cabo and had one of my best trips ever. All 7 rods went off at once a couple of times. Talk about a fire drill!!
You just have to throw it back in neutral and try to prevent a birds nest in that occasion

Ok it was actually three people but became one in a hurry.

My boat crew is a good friend who has had 2 spinal surgeries and cuts bait, rigs lures and hooks and drives. Doesn't reel in fish or gaff fish. He chunks all night.

My brother who is a great guy on the boat. Animal on the rod and just an all around prince on a boat.

I am the third.

We are doing a 3 day trip in the Hudson and are catching nothing!! On the troll couple of albies at night nothing. After the second night a good friend calls me in on a great bite on the 500 line south of the Hudson. Its early AM when we pull up. The bite is wide open. We put 5 rods in on the chunk and have 4 fish on instantly.

At this point my brother informs me that he has a medical condition (for his privacy we will leave the details out)that permits him from any physical activity!! 115 miles off the beach on a wide open bite and he springs this on me.

So I begin to reel in these fish. We leave them in the rod holder and hope for the best. He sticks the gaff I take the gaff and lift the fish and we go along boat all 4 fish. Bob the back pain riddled good friend is chunking like mad keeping the bite going.

The bite lasts 2.5 hours. I reeled in and gaffed 11 Yellowfin some dressed at 60 pounds and up.

After the bite ended we made breakfast got cleaned up and caught another 10 Yellows on the troll.

Needless to say I was in the rack for the 5 hour ride home!

Wild for sure. If I did it now there would be a memorial thread for me on Noreast.

Do you go for it? Or wait till you get more crew to come along?....
Have you done it?...If so, how'd it go?

I'd wait for more crew. A day trip is doable if you don't mind the big fuel bill but an overnighter is another story. The biggest issue I see is sleep and fatigue. For safety reasons we never leave one guy alone on deck at night so to start with you're looking at pulling an all nighter. Then during the day, one of you will be driving the boat while the other works the lines etc, I guess if it's slow you can take turns taking cat naps. Sounds like an iron man tuna trip to me.

you can do it with two people. im only 16 and ive done it before with one other guy. Its deffinatly an iron man trip the last time i went i got 1hr sleep in 2days. When you have multiples just let the boat drift this will keep most of your lines tight while you reel in the rest of your spread that went unhit. have one guy on a rod and one guy leader and gaff. its doable as long as gas prices are not a problem

I have been in the canyon with two guys on a 38 rampage. Talk about zero sleep and tired arms. It can be done. We trolled 6 rods in stead of our 12 rod spread. Trolling is easy just pull in all the rods and turn on the trolling valves. Its chunking where the fun begins. I try to keep two guys on deck all night just in case something happens. You have time to sleep the next night. Lots or red bulls and coffee. Well good luck to you you should be fine.

Did it once with just 1 went 5 for 8 on longfin at the dip. The sucky part was clean up everything with just 1. Did an overnight with 2, crazy action all night, did 5 yellows, 2 longfin then lost our straight gaff in 100+ yellow, that fish could have been a differnt story with more help. By the way this was all done in a 25Parker.

My son and I used to do it all the time, of course he's been fishing since he was old enough to walk and we have very good communications. I have also done canyon trips by myself. But to fish alone you have to prepare meticulously, as you can't call time out when you need something that you forgot to lay out within reach. By myself was strictly day trips, but the two of us pulled a lot of overnighters.

just me and my father went to hudson for a day troll last september, trolled 7 rods, 3 got hit at once with big eyes 2 tangled bad and i fought the other but by the time my father cleared the mess, my 50vsw was nearly spooled. it was unpredicted 4-5 foot seas and we ended loosing the fish because we didn't have a 3rd to leader with a daisy chain. however it was another learning experience and i would do it again.
