I tried the search and got very little for Cancun or Playa del Carmen.

I will be in Playa del Carmen in mid-May and plan on chartering a boat for the day. I am looking for recommendations for a hardcore, tournament style charter boat. I don?t want to book a tourist charter and that seems to be all I can find online. Does anyone have any contacts or experiences with charters near Playa del Carmen?

Thanks,
Will

Cancun!!

Hey guys I'm leaving on Monday for Cancun. I have two trips planned with cancunfishingcharters.com. I've never fished with them but from what I heard they have a pretty reputable crew and staff and provide transportation for 20 bucks if staying in Cancun. I'll let you guys know when I return!!

NOT going to happen in Playa.
Might be able to find what you are looking for in Isla de Muejeres
or in Cozumel, but not PDC.
Might even be a little late for the locations I mentioned,
as most of the pro boats are transients for the season.

If you like to inshore fish,
then invest your fishing dollars to the south of PDC
you will have a good experience.

If you are expecting to beat the crap out of pelagics from PDC,
you are going to need allot of luck to accomplish that.

Isla Mujeres

Try Jacks advice on going to Isla, as it may be your only shot at a hardcore tournament rigged type boat and crew. The fishing south for inshore and nearshore is phenominal, and the time of year you are there is perfect for an inshore grandslam.

You may be able to hook up with a transient type outfit out of Puerto Adventuras, but you would have to go there in person to see whos available. Rick's fllet might have a decent crew and boat avialable, you could do okay with them maybe, depending on your standards for what a killer trip might be.

Below is a pictures taken in December , one of the "fleet" in PDC...this first boat here is as close to tourney rigged as you'll get..

what do u catch on those boats inshore? how much are those guys?

Those are the offshore boats, believe it or not. They troll 1-5 miles off the beach, and will catch small tunas, white marlin, blue marlin(in season) and primarily Mahi and barracuda. They also will take bottom fishing on the reefs, where you can have a blast catching smaller fish with the occasional nice cubera or similar thrown in.(better option with kids) Bargain with them(everyone bargains in Mexico) and you will get a cheap rate, especially if you tell them they get to keep everything you catch. The inshore fishing takes place over in Cozumel, or better yet down south in Ascension Bay area, where you will catch bones, tarpon, permit, jacks, snapper, and snook. This is a world class fishery, and worth the ride from cancun area(about 3 hours from Cancun, 2 from PDC) A flats boat with guide will run you $200-$350 for the entire day!

HJ and Dom -Thanks for the input. Vacation is booked at Barcelo Maya Palace, it looks like Isle Mujeres would be a stretch to get to for a day charter. Looks like I?m relegated to the tourist fleet in and around Puerto Adventuras. Late May should see sailfish and marlin season kicking in. Any recommendations for boat/captain?

I?ll probably do a panga for a half day of bottom bouncing, but I am still looking at late May pelagic action out of Puerto Adventuras area. Captain Ricks seems to be the prevalent charter fleet with some okay boats. Anybody have any experience with Puerto Adventuras charters? I?m trying to take as muck luck out of the equations as I can.

Thanks,
Will

Hi Will,

Try walking around Puerto Adventuras, you may find a good boat and crew there in between tournaments. Rick's, if you stresss your abilities and need for a top flight crew, can provide, as long as they know prior to your booking. Several of his local crews are very fishy, and will get you on the fish.

You will be there at the start of the high season for marlin, so should be a good trip if you can get the right boat. Bring a few archer super bars if you can track em dowmn, they fold up nice for travel. Most of the boats pull ballys, dressed and undressed, so a few jets and smokers will help as well.

I have seen your hotel, a real nice looking place from the water!

Thanks Dom?I?m looking to lock in boat and day before heading down there. I?ll see if I can get the point across ahead of time that I am looking to fish, have an experienced crew with me and am willing to pay for top shelf gear/boat/captain. I?ll start with Capt. Ricks fleet.

Hotel is brand new, it looks nice online. Looking forward to R&R and fishing. I will definitely take a panga out for some reef raiding in addition to the day of trolling. I am definitely not looking to troll from a panga for the day.

Cancun
I fished Cancun about 12 years ago and i would recommend a share fishing trip. we went out on a 35 ft cabin cruiser and it was 100 dollars per person with a max of 6. we only had 4 and still went out. we landed a sailfish, a blue marlin and a white marlin. did not count all the small tuna and mahi we caught. all i remember that the capt was named jose and so was the mate! the trip was about 6 hours. the best thing was that the would fly the flags of the type of fish caught and the boats that were charging 600 per person were flying just a tuna flag. if i can talk to my old partner he may remember the name of the boat if they are still there.

just gave him a quick call and he thinks the name of the boat was the Tatiana.

Just back from PDC/Xcalak

The El Norte was blowin stink all week, no offshore jaunts for anyone with a brain. I am dead tired, but will post a full report on an incredible spot, Xcalak Mexico, well worth the drive. The inshore flats and lagoon fishing was second to none, as was the locale/wildlife. PDC is getting bigger by the day, was mobbed with ****** drunkards, probably wont go back there ever, after experiencing the fishing much further south, in an old world Mexican area with no electricity, but plenty of really nice places to stay for dirt cheap money. I fished from kayaks, and panga 2 days, what an experience. Pictures and full report tommorrow.....

Just some input for you guys. Fished with Capt. Rick out of Puerta Adventuras on a share trip ($90 per head)back in September.Trolled for about half the time, had one large Wahoo come into the spread with no hook-up. Bottom fished rest of time for a steady pick of yellow-tail snapper to about 12 pounds. Also fished Akumal with the akumal dive center (not shop) on one of there "panga" boats. This was pretty cool. Two fisherman, one "captain" on an open boat with 4 rods,2 outriggers, and a tiller motor. We only managed 1 cuda but the fishing there stinks in september. I'm going back in may and I think I will go out on the little boat again. The price is right ($150 USD & 15 Local tax for 3-4 hours),the guide was real nice (Raul),all the people were nice,BYOB,no shoes, and they will pick you up from your hotel if you ask nice. They also fish the same drop off about half mile off shore.

Update

I ended up booking with Capt. Rick on a 31 Bertram ?Reel Screamer? out of Puerto Adventuras for a day of trolling on 5/21. Wind was blowing steady all week and we got the average 4 to 6 foot NE conditions. Felt normal to me, but the wife did not love it. Caught plenty of 20+ pound mahi on the troll and kept 6 big gaffers (gave to crew). Could have baited many more mahi during the curiosity factor, but my sites were set on billfish and getting back on the troll. We had a huge bull come in hot but not come tight. We even boated a few big barracuda on mono/ballyhoo. Spanish mackerel kept slicing the ballyhoo. Final billfish tally was one white marlin and two sailfish. With a double on the sailfish, I made my seasick wife sit in the chair and land one. She felt better after landing her fist sailfish! I did bring some of my own trolling skirts and it paid off. Other than that the baits used had great color and were of good quality. We had several other opportunities with white marlin in the spread throughout the day. The Capt/mate worked hard and got us on some fish. Mate was very attentive and constantly changing out baits. Overall it was a good trip and I would fish with Capt. Rick?s fleet again. I am just used to trolling more than five rods at a time?.
