The Camp Hero permit is available at Montauk Downs State park and entitles you to night fishing parking on the south side of Montauk Point. In years past keys were given with the permit that let you in this section for parking day or night. I don't know there plans for this year, but I do know that you will have to pay a fee by day or present your Empire pass (for day use) to park in this area.I'll also mention that when the area was opened to the general public last year many law obiding fisherman including myself were upset that permits were purchased, but parking rules were not being enforced at all. In fact from the end of August(if memory serves me)through the rest of the season the gate which was supposed to be closed for night time fisherman was locked open, thus allowing anyone without a permit access.Anyway if you plan on fishing Montauk more than just a few times I would advise it's purchase.

Thanks Bill. Pardon my naivete(if thats how its spelled) but I am still a bit geographically confused. Parking is overnight at the regular Montauk Lot? and access is to THE former camp hero? I recall gated drive(s) to hero, are they/it beach permit only?
Maybe too many questions, but, how's the action?

In general the south side is a little tougher to fish than the North Side, but both sides have their days and nights of hard core surf fishing. Its about wind, tide, time of year, and avaiable bait to name a few factors. As for action you may get lucky in the fall and walk into blitzes that may last an entire tide. In the spring and summer it may take a little more effort to learn the winds and tides-but the effort is worth it. Thats not to say the winds and tide are not important in the fall-they are in my book, the 2 most important conditions. The thing about Montauk is that an area may produce on low ebb with NW winds, and another area that is no more than 100yds away maybe low flood with NE winds--just for example. So yes the action can be excellent but you will have to put in the time to learn it.---good luck
