Heard a lot about bunker heads.

Best way to hook a bunker head?
Through the lips?

The rest is pretty boney, pretty hard to hook, especially with a circle hook!

Should there be part of the bunker behind it or from the gills forward is considered the head (since I maximized the remainder of the portion of the bunker tail to the "head" section).

Thanks

in my opinion bunker heads are even better than eels! when im looking for big bass i only use the heads! definitely leave at least one inch, maybe two inches behind the gills. i cut off the head at a 45 degree angle to include all the guts and hooking it thru the lips is good cause you can cast and retreive it with minimal resistance. another way to hook the heads is to put the hook INSIDE the gut cavity and put the hook thru the hard part of the gills so it lays parrallel to the head. this is actually my preferred method for better hookups but the cast and retreive resistance is tough!

Yup
If you are going to cast it you will need a solid penetration which usually means (my choice) driving a hook thru the both lips. There is also a spot behind the eye (a bit hard to find) where a hook can be driven thru the head bone without resistance.
The third method that jjman13 has suggested is not very friendly to surf casting as he mentioned already

i think the best way to THROW bunker heads from both surf and boat is without any lead BUT ONLY IF THE CONDITIONS ARE RIGHT! tides, currents, moon, winds etc. are all factors BUT you can use a fish finder rig with just enough lead to hold and youll be fine!

I would respectfully disagree
If you can throw your head without the lead means one of two things
Either you are fishing in a NW wind after a cold front in which case surf is flat
Or you are fishing a slack tide in the inlet
Either way I rather not do either thing.Generally lead is a must in the surf and fishfinders are preferred tools to get you there.

Now drifting it from the boat with no lead is a different thing
