A buddy of mine went hunting this past fall in NC and brought me back some bucktails. i did not unfreeze them till this past weekend. I am a beginning tanner, i dont know if i am even spelling it right. but i think they are doing ok. If anone has ever tanned there own bucktails and has any info which would help me, that would be great? After i cut the tailbone out, i salted them up like jerky. i dont know how long the need to dry. I am getting ready for making my buctail jigs for the fall, and need to know how long they should cure. If anyone can let me know, thanks

Bucktails in Progress

Now that my deer tails have cured, it is that time of year when preperation for the rocks shall begin. Molded some tails and added primer coat. After painted will begin the tying process, I will post as i go for those interested. if not i will see you on the rocks.

My buddy gives me deer tails when he hunts & I never do anything more to mine than salt them lijke you did.
I always keep them in the freezer & if they stay nice & dry you're good to go.
I've never had any problem when using them right out of the freezer.
I always seal the thread & that seems to lock in the hairs anyways.

BIRDIEHUNTER!!!!!

you can buy bucktail hair any color along with molds and everything else you need for pole building or lure building at beckmanns tackle shop in merik long island not far from queens off of the sunrise highway his # is 1-516-593-7288
but they close by 6:00 so call first.

by the way guys i build my own rods and lures and i use what some would say unorthodox methods but they all work well one tip is i use wader appoxy (clear) to paint around my threads when im done tying the buckhair to the jig head its water proof and dries like a rock. try it. feel free to e-mail me @ [email protected]

Heyyyyyy!!!!

Let's not forget our very own Jaiem of ArtsNFlies. He's one of us, extremely knowledgeable and is a regular contributor here. You can order from his extensive inventory on his web site or see him at some of the fishing flea markets that will be coming up soon. I bought most of my stuff from him when I got started and he took the time and effort to explain things in detail from scratch for me. His prices are extremely competitive too.

I found this one step epoxy head cement, I guess it's pretty much the same compound. It comes in a nail polish type bottle with a brush in it. It's thick but pretty quick drying. I've used several coats to build up a head on large teasers that I've tied, applied stick on prismatic eyes, and then several coats over that, everything sealed in nice and dry. They come out looking great! [Or at least I (and those who love me) think so anyway:)]

Bucktails quantity

It all depends on the quality of the bucktail , and how you like your buck tails packed, some like them real dense and some dont. I like to purchase my bucktails from a store. when you order online you dont know the quality of the tail your getting. some tails I have purchased on line have been ok Quality and some not. But i purchased a plain bucktail for some of these i made above it was real fat. I made 10 white bucktails ( some posted above) and have 1 or 2 left on that tail at 2 to 3 oz range. also added some hackle feathers for a little more length and looks . hope it helps

I'm from the school of anglers that likes to tie his bucktails sparsely.... (Great job on those pics above by the way!)
As an alternative to bucktail hair I'd like to mention that Ive had great results using small rubber squids instead of the deer hair. I bought some of those 3 - 4 inch squids like you use for fluke , I cut the tips off & just glue em on with vinyl adhesive.

Right about now I'd like to be on anybodies payroll. However the truth of the matter is that I'm just a satisfied customer that finds it refreshing to share what seems to be of late all to infrequent pleasant and rewarding business dealings. I also believe in "taking care of our own". Jaiem is an advertiser on THIS board and therefore helps to make it possible for us all to use and enjoy it. I don't know you, you sound like a pretty good guy as well and I'm looking forward to clicking on your ad in the right hand column of this page, when and if it should ever appear there.
