this is a very sad situation. the bay was making a pretty good come back and now it is shot.

it's not just about lawn fertilizer....

I read most of it this morning. What I got out of it, aside from pols trying to get props for "acting" on this, is that back when the bay was "healthy" (ie loaded with shellfish) that brown tide was never a problem. Now that the shellfish population has been depleated the natural balance is thrown off. Shellfish have been likened to the human kidney in the way they filter the water. An aggressive shellfish restoration program might prove beneficial, and ultimately may help economically by reviving an industry, but the logistics of getting anything past the red tape, pork barrel littered back rooms of today's political environment, almost ensures that at the end of the day, nothing will really get done. Just a few photo-ops for the pols is all.

I only hear about how great the GSB was, considering I'm a minute's drive from it it's a sad state for us all. What can be done?

According to Newsday's map, the only area primarily affected is the Fire Island area. I am curious as to why this condition hasn't affected Jones, or Morices as much as it has FI ?

think the only thing that can be done to reverse it is hope the clams and other algae eating organisms come back up to population...
