BRAIDS

Last year ,The other Magazine ran an article about this ,by Pete Barret.
He said that these super braids will troll almost as deep as wire due to small diameter.I fish the other end of LI,in Jamaica Bay,and NY bight outside.I don't do much inshore trolling, but I do want to try it.I just set up one of my trolling outfits,a Penn 500,with 50# Yo-Zuri hybrid line, and will try it come springtime when the stripers are by JFK,or Breezy Point.
Offshore,I have trolled football tuna with braided black dacron with some success.

fisholigst,

Not sure if I'm confused or you are but Hybrid is NOT a braided line. It a Flouro/mono combination. It's also considerably THICKER than most monos in the same lb. test and will probably troll HIGHER in the water column.

The Dacron, although a braid, does not have the same thin diameter as the new "super lines".

Braided Line

Spiderline is great stuff but expensive,Saltwater Fusion or Cabela's Ripcord Thermofused, are both small diameter lines ,although not 100 percent Spectra, they will get you deeper, without diggin deeper in your wallet!

The past few years, I've done a lot of trolling with super lines, either Spider or Power Pro. With the right sort of deep diver, you'll get down 30+ feet. I generally do this with a Penn rod and 320GTI reel. It's very effective for bass and blues and a lot more fun that using a heavy wire rig. This past season, I tried some Storm divers about 7" long - very effective. Good luck and tight lines.

Nive due away with wire, braid or any other hitech line. There are many areas in the sluice and the race were it is under 40'. Use 40lb mono with a #2 planer and put on a 22' tube. Troll west to east over Valliant a couple of time and you will never think of wire agin. Besides there is no reason to be doing any real trolling off Orient!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I too used 50lb PowerPro and Storm/Mann 25' Deep Diving plugs. I believe with half the line out as wire, I got to over 25' deep and caught lots of fish.

I want to experiment with Braid, a drail and umbrella rigs.

While wire catches fish, it is not a sport hauling in 300' of wire.
