Clearing up the myth of BLO...
Sealing plugs is not rocket science, it just takes a few carefully thought out steps....
As someonne else stated, raw linseed oil(if you can even find it) takes forever to dry, if at all..
Boiled linseed oil has been around a long, long time, and in itself used in just about every oil based paint to, stain or sealer to aid in flow properties of the paint... read a can of Thompsons... the main ingredient... linseed oil....
Boiled linseed oil can be bought in quart can, to seal plugs cut it with mineral spirits... 60/40....60% BLO %40 mineral spirits...
By thinning the mixture, you allow for a faster/ deeper penetration and a faster dry time.... soak the plug for approx 30 minutes, hang and allow to dry... wiping is usualy not needed... plugs need to cure for 7-10 days.... dont rush the process, if you do, you may suffer adhesion problems...if after 10 days the plugs feel"stickey" wipe with mineral spirits and allow 24 hours to dry... lightly sand with #220 paer and wipe with a tack cloth, you should be good to go...
Precautions: BLO, creats heat as it dries, this is where the spontaneous combustion can occur, not in wood, but in rags or paper towels used to clean up or wipe the plugs...these rags/towels should placed in water imediatly after use and allowed to be soaked in water overnight then placed outside to dry, then they can be diposed of, follow thses simple precautions and Boiled linseed oil can be used safely..
Here are a few pictures of my set up, the BLO is mixed up at the strat of each plug buildidng season, it is then stored in a rectangular container with a snap on lid ( rubber maid under bed storage) the container sits in a aluminum turkey pan to catch extra drips...
After inserting a wire in each plug ( cut coat hanger bent slightly to stay in place) the plug is gently put into the solution and pushed under with another wire.. after soaking, the plug is retrieved ( with another bent wire, I never have to get the oil on my hands) and hung to drip... after approxamatly an hour the plug is put in it's drying spot and the cover reinstalled... at the end of the seaon, I put the box outside, fill it with saw dust/wood chips and allow it to dry out.... after a few weeks it can be disposed of in the trash... each season I make up a new batch, as by the end of the season the mineral spirits has evaporated and the integerity of the solution has been compromised...
