I got to agree with B.Attitude. I would use conventional tackle on boat. If you are thinking of using it for lure fishing, for example, casting into a blitz of Schoolies Stripers or Blues, I am using a 9' Daiwa Sealine Rod and a Daiwa BG 30. Total cost is $115.
If you are planning to use it for bottom fishing, I would suggest a 6' or a 7' Ugly Stik (1 piece) and a Daiwa Laguna LA5500 (XH- 5 BB, 1 RB, 4.1:1 26.8 20/290, 25/230, 30/190, about $69.95) Total cost about $120.

You can use any reel for the rod. I like the Laguna because it got more BBs and it is affordable.

Sounds like your starting out from scratch.Being your saying it will be used off a boat I would suggest a 6-7' rod(med action) and something like a penn squidder or jigmaster. They should hold up fine for you.

Chris,
if your talking about casting to ****tails then go with a 6 1/2' medium action ugly stick with a penn 5500 spinner. If your talking about catching bigger blues and bass go with a conventional.Theres no reason to have a rod longer than 7' on a private boat.

some of the baitcasters make pretyy good casting reels,
i agree with paulie, better to use a conventional combo.
but....i got a 7 foot ugly meduim action with a slamemr 560 an it has landed bass to 20 pounds with out too much of a problem,
the slammer reel is out of the price range, i think its 125 plus the ugly was about 50 bucks.

If you wanted to go a little over

As far as a dual purpose conventional, those graphite penn casting reels are right in that range, and could be used for blues/stripers/cod or just about anything. The squidder/jigmaster/ levelwind are OK, but the gear ratio on all these are a bit low. They can be casted, but are also not really great casting reels.

Since you asked about spinning reels though, if you wanted to spend an extra $30, go with a penn live-liner ($150). You get the trouble-free benifit of a 6 ball bearing spinning reel, with a free-spool option (like having two drags). It's perfect for bait w/ stripers/blues, but also is totally capable of throwing lures. Only downside is that it's only good for about 20 lb test, mabye 25, and isn't right for much in deep water.
As for a pole, hit walmart and grab a $10-$15 loose 7ft rod.

If you just want a quality plane old spinning reel, go with a penn power graph II (about $70). I've had 2 6000's
in the boat for some time; one's really been beat, but after oiling it up, it only shows a little extra play in the handle, still like new.

rods

I think you are just speaking of a rod, and not a reel/rod combo or reel. I think the smallest one they had in there was 8.5 ft. That's a little on the long side for a boat. It also really makes a difference what reel you are planning on putting on there.

Rods are also sort of a personal preference thing; everyone has their own ideal rod. I like rods a little on the light side - nice whimpy tips with stiff enough butt to handle some power, but better too light than too stiff etc.. For 25 lb Spinning tackle I like a 10-20 or, even better, a 10-15 lb rod (hence the broken rods) - others prefer a 20-40 or what not.

My .02; there are a zillion brands out there, some good and some not so good. I've got a box of destroyed spinning reels and piles of rod parts. All I've been buying lately for reels is Penn and my rods are starting to move in that direction as well. I don't have a single Penn rod or reel in that box or pile. A basic spinning Penn Slammer rod will run you $50 and they are pretty tough.

If you really want to go cheap as possible, for a first setup, check out Quantum. They make a $25 salt h20 spinning reel that is pretty tough, and have a bunch of poles to match in the same price range. This stuff is available at walmart for about half of what a sporting goods store will claim it's worth. Have also heard good things about okuma for the $$.
