I am going to look at a 1990 18' starcraft CC with 1990 mariner 50 on it.It has a new bimini new seats new canvas and comes with a trailer which has alot of new parts. $3000.00 I will be a first time owner. Any thoughts,advice etc.The boat is in good cond.He used it last week.

Sounds like a perfect 1st time boat. CC's are the easiest to dock because you crew has 360 degree access. That 18 footer model is a breeze to trailer & launch. The 50 Mariner is on the small side so don't expect the boat to move more than 25 mph. However, the short shaft will allow you to glide over many sand bars and through skinny water with no worries. It's a good boat so long as you don't overload it with too many passengers.

It sounds like a good first boat for fishing. I agree with DoctorFish, 50 HP is small for an 18' boat. If you plan to use the boat for tubing or water skiing the engine could be a problem. If the boat does not come with a cover you should buy one, it will keep the inside clean and the seats nice much longer then if you leave them exposed to the elements.

glass or aluminum? i'm bettin on aluminum, in which case a 50 that still has balls will push it fast enough for fishing(25-28 mph).

two years ago i enrolled with my three sons in to a power squadron course,just a refresher but you can never know to much on the water. anyway the commmodore teaching the class was asked that very question,he answered and i was surprised to hear him say, get the biggest boat your money can afford because in no time you will be comfortable with it,the other way once you get used to being on the water it will be time to sell the boat and move up.
