I very confused, perhaps someone can help me become more informed.... I am now the proud owner of a 1986 Proline cc which I repowered with a brand new outboard. I was looking to get insurance on my boat but this is what I found out. When applying for an online quote your asked for the year, make, and model of your vessel, no where does it ask if you re-powered with new motors. That being said the value of your policy for any claim will be for that year boat??? I spoke with Geico and Progressive and they explained that if I was to hit a submerged object which did damage to my motor the claim would be treated as if the motor was the original motor on a 1986 hull??? From doing a bit of research this hull is really not worth all that much but my investment in the engine is. Does anyone know if or how I'd be able to get coverage for the current value of the boat, motor, and trailer (only 3 years old) so if I had a claim I won't find out later that the 'agreed value' will most likely pay me squat? It was suggested that I go and get an appraisel from an reputable source but that does not mean the insurance company will pay any more than they feel they need to.

Boat US came back with a quote of almost double what I currently paying. I have had real good luck with the Frank Bradford agency. Excellent Customer Service and they find you good, affordable coverage.

Any policy I had and have, asked for the Year, model, make and ID nunbers of both the hull and engine in seperate columns. Showing a brand new engine on an older hull will increase the required coverage amounts.

I think in your situation you may do better with someone who will look at what you have and then look for a company that will give you the coverage you feel is reasonable. I also have had good experience with Alan R Mott in Huntington, they worked to find a company that would insure my boat for more than it was originally because of the extensive work done to it recently (stringers, deck, interior).

'agreed value'

If you say it's worth 10k & the insurer agrees & issues insurance you should get back 10k minus deductable.

I had State Farm, Boat was insured for 5k, & 1k personal items. 500 deductable.

Boat was stolen from dock, stripped & smashed beyond repair. All gear stolen and set adrift with the motor running & landed on a sand bar & burnt the powerhead.

State Farm paid me 5,500 & promptly dropped my insurance & refunded unused time on insurance.

Now have Progressive with another boat with agreed value of 10k for boat & motor, plus 2k personal items.

I got a quote for a new policy that was much cheaper than I'm paying now, but the insurer insisted that the boat be surveyed first:confused:

cost of the survey would negate premium savings

first time I've been asked for a survey

It happens fairly often Skip with older boats. I've had to get a survey done just to keep the insurance I had, now its a mjor deterant to switching companies. General rule is that the Insurance companies will require a survey on any boat over 15 years old and will require another anytime they feel like it.

Phone calls.....

Wow, I guess I have to make some telephone calls. I didn't know $800 was double what I should be paying for $48,000 worth of agreed value coverage.

I have already dropped my coverage because my present machine is on the market and being sold but I will be 'boatless' for a very short time. Will definitely compare BOATUS with the others for the next boat.

Just to make sure we're comparing apples to apples and oranges to oranges, are any of you guys who responded insuring older boats which have been re-powered with new motors?

I have not re powered, but I just changed from ACE to Allstate for my Aquasport, and I was allowed to declare my own value for boat, motor and trailer. I put in 7000 for boat, 3000 for motor and 2000 for trailer.
I think I'll also change my Contender policy as the one I have now is restricted to what was on the title. I put in a lot of time and material into the boat after I bought it and they refuse to acknowledge that, even with all my receipts. :(

Old clean boat, brand new power and most everything else. I would never have launched it without proper insurance. Too much money at stake sitting in the water.

My hull is a 1983 and my motors were brand new 2005's bought in 2006 as leftovers. My policy was for 48,000 (I let THEM pick the number to replace what I have )boat and motors only (no personal gear) for a premium of just over $800. I didn't think that was out of line but some people were saying boatus wanted to charge them double other companies. I don't know how accurate that is because I didn't compare other companies.

If you want boat insurance and peace of mind, I figure buy it from a company that specializes in boats and know what you are getting, proper boat insurance.

Boatus may require survey on older boats and occasionally they will ask you if they can survey it again but they will foot the bill 100% for these repeat surveys as they come up.
