I've had success with fresh bunker strips, when I can get them and don't want to keep a rotting fluke carcass, so before I land that first 17" keeper, what do you use instead of squid? I've heard that bluefish skin works, but in my only attempt, it went untouched? Has anyone else had any luck? From what part of the bluefish - the belly? How about searobin strips? Again, will side strips work or must it be from the belly?

Just went fishing on MOnday...used bluefish strips for the first time and was very pleasantly surprised. caught several nice fluke on it. (the strips didn't hold up as well as the sea robin or fluke belly..but seemed to appeal to the fluke).

also, sea robin and of course fluke belly are good also.

Blue fish strips will work. Sometimes I fillet any dead left over snappers and use em. Mackeral, sea robin, dogfish, pretty much any kind of belly strips will work ;) Which one is the best? Well that's open for personal interpetation!!!

I used chunks of snapper at the end of June, they were last year's - ones that us and the grandkids caught off the boat at the dock - I went on an impulse trip right outside the Gerritsen Beach bridge, taking a break working on the boat......as luck may have had a hand, best hour of fishing for fluke so far this year, 4 nice keepers!

Bluefish skin sounds like a good attractor, will have to give it a try

Botumfeder,
I just found an "8-pack" of snapper in the back of my freezer. How large did you make the chunks? I thought I would cut mine in about 4 or 5 pieces from top to bottom and than use a 4/0 or so around the backbone and out (?)

JAMESA - These snappers were about 6 inches long, maybe.....I cut the head off, used the tail piece up to about the vent, and cut the main body into 2 pieces.....no particular shape, just cut at a little bit of an angle.
