desanis,
First of all… Are you related to
Irrdain? For some reason or another, there's some kind of "urgency" to answer your questions in a timely fashion. You are also making inquire about Crab Meadow grounds? What's with that?

I don't know if they're going for bunker chunks or plug or some other lure.
Who are "they"? Are you fishing with a group of friends from a boat -or- party boat -or- from shore? In order to answer your question properly… I will need to know the difference (determine the proper methods).
Also, how big are they, what pound test-line and what size hook to use?
Well… in regards to Bluefish… depending when you target them in the North Shores… the school could be anywhere from ****tail size (1-4 lbs.) up to choppers in the 10-15 lbs. class. As far as pound test-line… if you are casting plugs… Make sure you have a "wire leader" because they have very sharp teeth that will even chop your 80-lbs.-test line!
If you plan to use lures… Blues on frenzy are not very selective… You can use the following: Tins, swimmer, poppers and bucktails. It is also a good idea to pinch the barbs to make unhooking easier!
If you plan to chunk: Again, make sure you have a "wire leader" tipped with a large hook. Depending on the school size that is roaming your waters… it is good to go to your "local" bait shop for further details.
Two more things, do you need a permit over a certain age or for all ages or none at all? And are there any bonito running right now?
I am not sure if I understand your question… but if you are referring to a fishing license… No! There is NO saltwater license required and in fact… We encourage the young to participate in fishing. All you need to make sure is that in NY… there is a bluefish regulation (10 per person per day)!
As to the bonito question… It is too early… In the late summer and fall… the bonito and albies roams the area!
Please reply as soon as possible.
Hope I've answered your question in time.
BTW: please let me know if you are related (or same person) to
Irrdain?
Tight Lines,
