Seems that any time I get infested with BLueSharks we never see a mako, Many Times after landing a Mako we will see Blue Sharks move in. I'm considering in the future to break our drift on the occasions when large schools of Blue sharks come in to set up else were. Has anyone else resorted to this our have you found Makos to strike after fighting a couple BLue Sharks.

SharkinJeff,
I have found that bluesharks will stay around until a mako comes in the area.(not pups)They know that they can be dinner if they stay around.Same thing goes for bluefish, you might have them around for hours and all of a sudden they are gone. There is a reason why they left.I once had bunch of birds take off in a panic right before a mako appeared. These things are signs of something about to happen. When things like this happen I get very excited and I'm looking all over for a fin to surface and staring and the chum line hoping for a visitor. Can you hear the music?Dum Dum ,Dum Dum,Dum Dum!!!!

I STAY...

Even though bluesharks can be a nusance,I stick around. Its a sign of life around and I figure if bluesharks found and liked my slick than its good enough for a mako.

SHARKINJEFF, I go shark fishing with the hopes of catching a Mako, I don't go Mako fishing. More often then not, we do not come back with a Mako and if it were not for the Blue Sharks, I probably would have given up shark fishing years ago. They can be a lot of fun and I have a lot of great memories from them. Try tail roping one and fighting it on a light spinning outfit.

I do however understand your fustration and in regard to your question, no, I would never, ever, break my slick because of Blue Sharks. Mako's and Blue Sharks basicly follow the same migration routes and are in search of the same food source, which in our area, at this time of year, is Bluefish and Tunas. The 2 species tolerate one another and keep there distance from one another, but the space between each other is not very far. I have never seen the 2 fight each other. I have heard stories of Makos fighting with Swordfish and Marlins, but have never witnessed that. I consider any type shark in my slick, with the exception of dogfish, to be a good sign.

Stick it out.

Tight lines,
Matt

The activity around the boat made by the dogs will help call in the makos. Believe me... they will scatter like scared cats if a big mako shows up. Makos WILL eat blue dogs. If you get annoyed pull your hook baits out and wait for the prize fish.

A few seasons ago we had blue sharks all around the boat. I gave one of the anglers a spinning rod with a short wire leader and a baited hook.

I told him to leave the bait down about 6 feet and watch it. If a big blue goes after it pull it away and wait for a smaller blue, which would be more suited for the spinning gear.

As I turn around one of the people on the flybridge who has been watdching us jumps up and says "Tom he's got a mako on."

One skyrocketing jump and the mako cuts the 20 lb. mono.

I grab a 50 class rod and reel and get another bait back into the waer. The mako comes back but the blue sharks won't leave.

The mako is pacing back and forth behind the transom where the mako originally took the spinning rod bait, and I now have the second bait in the water..

Three blue sharks totally ignore the mako and are after the bait, and I have to keep moving it to keep them from getting it. The mako won't take it and is just swimming back and forth

Finally I drag the bait around to the chum cage with the blue sharks following and flip the bait back over the transom where the mako takes it.

I free spool the line while we start the boat and move away; then I tension the line to hook the mako.

We boated the mako which was over 300 lbs.

Don't count on blue sharks always running away whan a mako shows up.- Tom

Mike,
Did you use your riggers to set up a giant slingshot to launch the bait?LOL
Mike,I thought it was strange that the bluesharks hung around after Mr Mako showed up.I've seen them scatter.

Tom & Mike, I've seen the same type thing many times too, with a Mako right in there with the Blue Sharks, close, but not too close to one another. I have never seen them bother each other. On the other hand, when Blue Sharks mate, I have seen them biting and chasing each other, part of their "love" making thing. Come to think of it, I do that sometimes too.

Paulie,
I'm afraid my outriggers would bend far enough :) I had to stand on the outside of the belly band, holding on with one hand and a whole mackeral rigged up in the other. The fish was swimming in circles and I just heaved it as far as I could as he approched the closest in his circling.

Thanks guys,
I learned something new today about makos and bluesharks kind of hanging together.I would think the biggest blueshark would run from a 300 lb mako,go figure.
