Has anyone caught any of these? I remember reading a book by Tim Coleman called fishing New England that mentions Blue Hake as a common bycatch while codfishing. I have a friend that fished the Miss New Englander out of Newburyport Ma. (its no longer there)and catching quite a few. the fish are blue and have alot of scales. Some pics i have seen were of some nice size fish. I even heard of some fish store owners buying these fish years ago for like .25 a pound and selling them as Scrod. I bring this up only because since i have been fishing up north i have not seen any caught.

Blue hake ( white hake) are also coming back . We crushed them on the bunny clark last year fishing very deep water (100 fathoms). This one weighed I believe 47 lbs and they lost one at the boat that Tim Tower swears was 55 lb.
I had one Trip in Oct when I got 6 between 30 and 37 lbs fishing 101 fathoms on a bright sunny day.

Snow just started here.

Wow thats a nice pup! Remindes me of the time i was commercially fishing the HelenH in the early 90's i had a big hake around 70 lbs. Joe had to put the rod on his shoulder and lift to get the pig up ! I gave them the name Barnsitible monsters because they were so dam ugly and thats where we sailed from LOL:)

In Maine corned hake rules. All the hake I gave away had people asking for more.
Corned hake=
salt hake fillets fot 12 hours, they become boards you could side your house with. When you want to eat them boil three times, changing the water each time.
Mix with mashed pototoes salt and pepper and there you have it.
You can also bake it , fry it and do just about anything you do with cod to it.
Personally, pus bags are a pretty good discription.

White hake=blue hake
I maybe wrong but I believe the color phases are a result of darker fish being resident fish ( on wrecks for instance)fish just in from somewhere offshore are lighter. We got both and other than color they seemed the same.

they are good to eat, I worked at a fish dock that will remain nameless. we sold this stuff as scrod, which according to the owner was, "any one of a number of coldwater, whitemeat bottom fish". the shoulder fillets were very thick (3-4"), some customers wanted the shoulder, some the tail section. typically we would see 20-30 lb fish (headed and gutted) in the crates we bought. those were some big puppies...

do they fight ??

We still see some hake on our offshore wrecks starting around 45 fathoms and deeper nowadays off Long Island. Once you get past the Dip off of Montauk, you see hake in more abundance on the deeper water wrecks. The Nantucket wrecks were noted for their large hake, but one of the all time hake wrecks was the Norness which was one of the best producing hake wrecks around. I would say, that all hake are not as common as they were ten years ago, and again, this may be due to our warmer water temps. Those ol' hake spots are now infested with the black sea bass!

If you want to see a interesting link on the amount of white hake caught in the GULF of Maine, and the corresponding rise in price, go to this link:

I AGREE WITH U EC BUT...

IT MAY BE POSSIBLE THAT WE HAVE MORE SEABASS ON THE WRECKS NOWADAYS IS DUE TO THE DEPLETION OF COD AND HAKE FROM THE COMMERCIALS, THUS ALLOWING THE SEABASS TO THRIVE WITH LESS PREDATORS AND ARE ABLE TO REPRODUCE EXCESSIVELY WITHOUT THE THREAT OF BEING EATEN BUT THATS JUST MY OPINION, I WOULD RATHER IT BE THE CASE THAT UR SAYING THAN TO SEE THEM BEING ERASED BY THE COMMERCIALS BUT I GUESS WE JUST DONT KNOW
