thanks for the info. I hope to be using it soon.
Thank you for the link, very interesting to know especially large freshwater species like lake trout. I don't eat much thebig ones anymore (catch and release most) but i will try bleeding this year. One note of warning, it is illegal to field strip/gut clean fish in and near the shore of any freshwater fishery in the state of new york.

An even quicker way, bleeding done the same way but using your hands two figers in the gills and the other to grasp the fishes body, quickly snap the neck back (only recommended for trout under 2lbs) it is probably the quickest way to put the fish down and it will bleed all the same.

If you damage the heart it won't pump out the blood.

I just billy the fish, snip a gill through and put it in the box - seems to keep them quiet and they bleed out nicely.

i have been bleeding fish this way for years they stay alive long enough to bleed out.

It doesn't matter if the fish is still alive. If the pump is damaged all the blood doesn't get pushed out, simple.

i've never had a problem bleeding fish this way,the meat is always clean.if the fish is dead how is it going to pump blood out?

I'm sure you get most of the blood out. If you want to get all or more of it out just snip the gills or cut the artery by the gills. If you damage the heart (pump) you are leaving the bleeding up to gravity. Does this make sense?

The way we commercial guys do it is by making a slice by the tail and snapping the bone, all the blood will run out.Make sure the fish is in water when you do this.Use a cooler and fill it with water cut your fish by the tail snap the bone and let him swim in the cooler and it will bleed out.Works every time. We do it with fluke it works great.

I've heard of that with catfish, seems like a good idea, the spine must have a lot of blood running through it and the fish attempting to swim must help the matter. I'll have to try that some time.

I usually stick two fingers into the gills and rip them out, then wave the gills in the air and yell like an Indian. It's probably no more effective then using a knife or scissor but it's definitely more fun
.........oh yeah, beer helps with the fun factor.
