This certainly isn't the kind of behavior we should be rewarding. I don't think any of us would like it if that was our anchor getting snagged or our heads being smacked with broom handles or weights. Running a successful business is one thing, but it shouldn't come at the expense of acting like a human being.

Like Gama said.. The Capt on the James Joseph is out of this world.BUT I'm sure as **** that he knows his stuff when it comes to blackfish.
I myself is a regular & caught many decent fish &
pool winners many times.but I do agree that what he does to other boats when they are fishing his
"secret" spot( which is no more ) :) is really not nice.I feel bad for them really... but what can I do or say,he's been doing that for as long as I can remember..
but if it's catching good size tautog,he's the one to go see.
hookem_cookem out.

Bite in on now on the Capt. James. I got my limit up to 7 lbs on yesterday trip(11/11/01). Obviously I lost many bigger fish and a lot of sinker(exactly 18) on the sticky bottom. They tried three different wreck including Celtic wreck and all produced fish. Fishing has been good since Thursday. I fished with Freddy C. from NJ on 11/10/01 and fishing was decent on the Sandy Hook Reef. I got 7 keeper blackfish out of 20(probably I was a high hook among 30 guys). But as far as bulldog blackfish is concerned, there are not many places to match with Long Island Sound. When you go with Capt. James, try to avoid Sunday. It is a mob scene. Yesterday was no exception.

Kilsong,

Did you see many other anglers limit on the 11/11 Huntington trip? The reason why I ask is that I was in the area that day when the boat returned and there didn't seem to be too many anglers with smiles on their faces and fish in their coolers. The general reply that I heard was that the fishing was slow.

Doctorfish,

I believe only a few guys got limit out of more than 40 fishermen on 11/11 trip. The guy next to me got skunked. I know many people on the boat didn't do well. One of the main problem was private boats were fishing on the each wreck before us and we could not sit on the wreck properly. Accordingly only one section of the boat had a good bite. I was fortunate to be on the right spot.
I travel a lot to catch blackfish ranging from New Bedford, MA to Wachapreague, VA. So I have pretty good idea when and where to go. In case of Huntington area, I usually wait until the end of October when blackfish move in to the mid-depth wreck(50-70 feet) after big blow of northwest wind. However, because of higher than average water temporature, we didn't have any consistent good fishing until last week. When a guy hook up more than 20 black, at least I know finally fish arrives. It does not mean you catch a lot of fish whenever you go out. You have to be right spot at right time. I remember many many years ago when Capt. John was running Noli Eileen, I had 24 keeper black, all over 5 lbs. But that kind of days are gone forever. If some of the fishermen on the party boat catch limit, it should be regarded as a pretty good day.

Doctorfish,

I used 8 ounce sinker, but I could use 6 ounce because there was not much current that day. From late October to mid Noverber I used to go blackfishing from Smithtown Bay with my friend boat. We have many good wreck(65-75 feet) loaded with big blackfish. We usually fish around slacktide and there are many accasion fish stop biting when the current starts to run hard even though we could hold bottom.
