Hi Going with Noreast on the blackfish charter oct 26th on the Celtic Quest and wanted to check if this is a good setup to bring with me or if I have some overkill here. This will be my first time Tog fishing after all these years of fishing.
I have a Okuma Level wind conventional reel loaded with 30lb power pro line mounted on a Diawa Beef Stick 5'6" 30-50 lb boat pole Model BF EB 561XHF
I picked it up last year when I was going to go out for Tog but plans changed and I never got to go. I do have a Ocean Master conventional OM 4000 and a 7'Tica rod to bring instead but I thought I would ask those who know here. Thanks for any help and advise.
The bottom 2 pics are of the 7' Tica with the OceanMaster reel and the last pic is of both rods. Which one should I use on this trip?

I personally can't help you out with this, a/ because I've never seen the rod or reels you are talking of, and b/ because most of the Okuma tackle I've seen has not been up to the standard of its competitors, like Shimano, Penn and Daiwa.

Having said that, most any reel will hold up over a decent period of time if you maintain it to the nines and do not push it past what it is designed to do.

Come to think of it, I have seen those Beefstick rods - they are beefy all right. You could use that one, but I would look for another lighter stick to accompany it on that trip. For not alot of money at all, have you looked at the Shimano Sojourn, Daiwa Eliminator and BPS 6'3" Muskie stick? Any of those three would be a nice compliment to the h/d bruiser you now own and I doubt any of the three I mentioned would cost you more than $39.

Take a look in your local tackle shops and see if you don't agree.

Good luck on that CQ trip. I've fished with Capt Desi - and had some terrific tog trips. He and his mates are true professionals and run a first-class boat.

Reel should be OK. longer rod would probably help though. 5'6" is a little short for fishing on a party boat to me. I would go for more like 6'6" - 7'........ it helps to keep the line away from the boat, you can lift the fish out of the rocks a little quicker. I'm not familiar with the Tica rod, but if it's over 20# and like a M- MH rod it should work.

bring them both. i'll look at them and tell you which one to go with that morning. we have plenty of rod storage on the boat so you can hang up the one you're not going to use.

the reels/line should be fine but the daiwa is definetely to short and the tica prob. to light... i second lep's post on another rod choice.. for an extra forty bucks cant go wrong.. right on the money..
wouldnt want to be at a disadvantage with equipment..
