I'm looking to buy an off the rack blackfishing setup and am considering the following. I'd basically be fishing off the NJ coast from inshore rockpiles to 17.Any feedback/input/opinions would be appreciated. I'm currently fishing with a Seeker BA-85 with a Penn 965

GLoomis Bucarac BR915C with a Penn 965
Lamiglas BL7030C with a Newell 229 or 332
St.Croix GMC70XH with a Newell 229 or 332

Hi,

I like the Lamiglas set up. I build on the blank that the BL 7030 C uses and I like it.

St Croix has nice blanks. Is the XH a little too stiff for 17 fathoms?

Look for a Seeker BCSW 658. I might have the letters wrong but the 658 is correct. That rod has a great tip and lots of backbone. My freind has taken blacks up to 10 lbs off a reef using a custom rod I made him using the 658 blank.

Thanks for the reply

Capt Neil, thats for the reply. I haven't held the St. Croix stick so I'm not sure about how stiff it is. I'm just going by what I've read on a few different boards. I have held the Lamiglas and I like the way it feels.

I like to blackfish but perfer striper fishing in the fall and I don't go toggin' that often. Thus, I haven't developed that 6th sense for putting a consistent tog catch together. I'm not looking for the end all be all absolute ulitmate blackfish stick but one I can use in various locals (shallow to deep water) and can handle a wide range of weights.

Which one will he be selling?

I have the Bucara mentioned and used it two days this week blackfishing a jetty. I think it's a really good rod. Great power and very good bite sensitivity. I was surprised given the fast action at just how much of the bite I could feel - and this was without braid.

Um, I have all three of those rods;)
I love each one. The Loomis Bucara is nice but might be a lil light for 17 when the currents ripping. If you fish braided line on it you gotta be careful since it's all graphite. Very sensitive setup, and I have the Penn 965 with 30# FireLine on it. Was great this past week for sea bass and tog up to 6.5# in shallow water.
The St. Croix is sweet and have used up to 10ozs on it. Different action then the Bucara, but still very sensitive, teemed with braid and its a real nice setup.
The Lami is pretty nice, haven't fished with it much to put it through the paces, but think it should be very nice. Right now a Newell 332-5 is on it...can't wait to put a cuple whitechins on the other end.

All three are good choices, and of course that's a biased opinion ;)

TO cover the range of places you want to fish, I'd say go with the Lami.

More Rod Stuff

You might want to check out Lami MB1143F. Our friend made one for me I'm sure he can make one for you. For the type of fishing you currently do - you'll find a multitude of reasons to own it.

Skolmann already owns a SEEKER BA85 which is probably the best inshore off-the-rack blackfish rod you can get. We've gotta stop entertaining him - this messageboard posting is something that tackle junkies do between purchases. Sooner or later he'll have every rod mentioned anyway.

Andy - If you want I'll bring the Lami and the Bucara next Saturday and you can try them. I would hold off on the Tri-flex. There's no real progression to that blank. With braided line just about any rod is sensitive enough to feel the bite.

You might also think about putting the Newell with PowerPro on the stick you brought to Mass last Spring. Don't you already own a HARLEE Lami0712 ?

Who's The Tackle Junkie?

Tim, who's the tackle junkie? Seems as if every other week your up at HARLEE ordering a new custom rod. How many do you have now? According to one of your other posts, you have 30 custom sticks in the rack. And what's this business about entertaining me?-you have more posts here than me. Hope you know I'm just busting your chops here.

The rod that I brought up to Mass. was what we affectionately refer to as the "kill stick" and I'm almost 100% sure its an Ugly Stick blank. But you are correct in saying I need to match it with a Newell as opposed to the Penn 320 Gti I have on it now.

The rod I have hanging at the store is made on either a Lami 963M or 1063M blank (at least according to Ray-he can't recall which) with a #12 tip.

Are you refering to the other Lamiglas rod I had made for fluke?

I'm doing the Sea Hunter Sunday if you wanna come-although knowing you you'll probably be on your favorite jetty fishing for those bucktooth varmits. Oh yea, got some reliable info about some nice bass & blues from the beach.

If this helps. I bought a 8 foot St. Croix SWC80HF last year. I fished at "17" and deep water off LBI with it. It handled 10oz sinkers with no problem along with big tog. The rod was a little pricy but it was well worth it. <*)))><

Hi all,

The Lamiglas MB 114 3F is almost finished, 2 more coats of epoxy should do it! I am slowly breaking down and convincing myself to treat myself to a new Newell to go with it. I know the 322 should be the one but I might try one of the 220 series reels, less expensive. I will have a gear change to 3.6 to 1 if possible, or I have a new jigging reel. Maybe a 220 and put 40 # test on it.

Then it is off to the north shore for some fishing. Looks like I might be running a PJ boat a couple times a week for the black fishing season so I might get ample time to test it. That is if my friends who want to try it give me a chance.

This demo rod, "White Chin", will be available for you to test so get in touch if interested.

Hi,

I just finished the MB 114 3F. Can't wait to try it out. A friend is taking it to Mass. this Thursday to test it.

Can't wait to hear how "WHITE CHIN" lives up to its name. It is available for anyone to test.
