dwk2252...the 111 and 112, respectively known as the black 2/0 and 3/0 use the penn 66 bridge sleeve. But even with this bridge sleeve it can still accept the same power handles with see on the 112H red 3/0 senator and 500 jigmasters. You used to be able to pick up part number 24-55 and 24-56 which gave you either the 1 7/8 and 2 1/2, 3 hole torpedo knob. You could also get the 24-112h short one hole knob. They used to be made in a number of colors, but now come in either a hard rubber or plastic black knob...what a shame! Anyway, they go right onto these reels. Any good tackle shop like Bernies in Sheepshead has a selection of these handles for your reel.

you can order the handles new from Penn. Visit the Penn website for the details. cost is about 9 bucks and delivery is within 10 days. I swapped out the counterbalance handles on all of my black 3/0's. By the way, this is one of my favorite reels. Slow by today's standards, but what torque. Just don't put too much stress on these reels. I blew up two of them on the same cod trip this summer. Both reels had the spools warp so bad that they rubbed the outer walls and would not turn. That's what you get when you catch slobs with jigmaster sized reels. Good luck and stay warm.

Love codfishing myself. It is my favorite pastime. Since I'm from L.I. I haven't had many banner days locally since I was young on the Viking out at Coxes Ledge. I'm a young guy (35) so I missed out on the days of yore. I prefer jigging above all else but sometimes you have to use bait. My best days in terms of size and numbers have been with the jig. I switched to the Newell 540 3.2 for all of my codfishing and it is a joy to fish with. I always was fascinated with the history of the Viking boats probably because my father fished them in the glory days. Growing up my family did not have the money or time to travel for vacations so we used to spend two weeks at Montauk during the summer. I remember when the Starship was built and during its first week the captain used to give free boat rides to promote the boat. Beause I happened to be there that week I basically sailed on it every day. Since the fishing has dropped off so badly I do almost all of my codfishing in Mass. or RI. It is nice to hear from guys who are still excited about fishing.

walsh's

dwk,
you're right, right now walsh's is only fishing weekends. My bad. I was supposed to go on a two day trip on the helen h with kenton geer, captain of the bunny clark, this weekend, but we got blown out, so instead decided to fish walsh's yesterday. It was a very enjoyable trip. Kenton "Codgod" Geer was high hook with 20 keepers, mostly good sized markets, and tied for the pool with a 34 lb. cod. I had 15 keepers, almost all of them 10-20 lbs. We released all of the fish except for about 5, which we gave away to less fortunate fishermen. Best of all, we were only a 40 minute ride from the dock, and fished in only 60-150 feet of water! We were planning to go again, but the weather sounded nasty so we decided not to go. I would try again on their boat because the fishing is sometimes sporadic, but is getting more consistent now with the colder water temps.
Good luck.

Is this becoming another cod post?

Just came back from a cold windy day of cod fishing and saw this thread and had to chime in. Went out on Walsh's and I don't think this trip should have gone out. Over all the conditions were not very bad, but makes for very uncomfortable fishing. With wind gusts up to 40 mph and the boat swinging on the anchor, it made for a very tough day. Capt shorten the day and came in early, thank goodness. I managed 3 cod and dropped a very good fish. Pool winner was a 28 lb cod.
Willy if you are reading this, how are you doing? Guys on the boat where giving me trash for wearing a "Bunnyclark" sweat shirt. They told me that "the captain of the Bunnyclark and a kid were on board and killed the fish yesterday". When they told me how much fish you two caught I was not surprised. To ECNM, thanks for the reply on the Hyannis cod fishing. I would like to get on a charter out of the Cape.

Steve,
we were both using angermans, 10's when we were anchoring, and 16's on the drift. I fished a fly as a teaser, but Kenton fished a straight jig with a tube attached.
Ken,
Kenton and I were thinking of going on Walsh's again today, but decided last night that with the howling winds out of an unfavorable direction for cod fishing, that we would call it off. Sounds like it was a good decision. BTW, did you're helen h trip scheduled for 11/15 go? My next trip is 12/22.
See ya,
