I went out this morning to scout out a couple of new spots that I want to learn this year--spots that are in and around Manhattan for mornings I don't have time to make it out to the Island, the Rockaways or Jersey. When I got to the first spot I was surprised to see scores, if not hundreds, of birds working close to the shore picking up what looked like sea worms or sand eels. There was no noticeable fish however...BUT IT WON'T BE LONG NOW!

out in port jeff lots of worms but no spearing or sandeels yet.

Probably cinchworms. I saw the birds at them in Northport.

This is what you would call chomping at the bit. The wait is about over.

no, full sized sand worms, i see 6-18 large ones swimming past my favorite point depending on the tide. also have seen some small floounder around. will probably get out on the first.
