All of my best party boat tuna trips have happened in November. The end of October can also be excellent. While banner trips can be had in August, September and early October, I have found the fish really go on the feed when the water drops into the mid to low 60's. unfortunately the weather gets dicey later in the season

As previously mentioned try to avoid the full moon, although none of that may matter given the complete lack of tuna from the Lydonia down to the Carolinas. Hopefully the big blow this weekend will stir things up, but as of know the outlook is pretty bleak if you ask me. Fingers crossed that things improve ASAP

The light of the moon sends the bait deep, that's the understanding. Also, the tuna don't want to stand out high in the water column, as they are bait also. There are a few factors like cloud cover, chop, fog that can help. Try your hand at swords;)

very hard to say

as was previously stated, every year is a little different. I have had some of my best catches in Sept in some years while in other years Oct was the top producer. Keep an eye on the reports and be prepared to go when the first good reports start comming in.

Does this mean the new moon is any good? I am fishing Sept. 27,28 (The 29th being the new moon).

What are you planning on bringing tackle wise?
Well,I have the stand up rod with a Penn Senator 9/0 that I use for shark fishing,a heavy star rod with a Penn 360 Gti for jigging was thinking of bringing a lite spinning outfit also for squid and stuff for bait.I plan on buying all the assorted hooks and leaders mentioned in the other thread and some jigs.As far as coolers I have one 150 qt igloo. Is that big enough?

The 9/0 and spinning gear is good, a 360GTI ?? You usually use a 3/0,4/0 or equal for jigging. Jigging reels need line capacity and drag pounds. You really need to control the fish, this will help you land it. When you go running up and down the rail you get alot of tangles, which equall lost fish. small cooler for food, most boats will tell you leave the 150 cooler in the truck. Most of the mates sell Tuna rigs or make some up. Sabiki's for bait, squid jiggs for squid, bucktail or Kastmaster for mahi. You don't need the kitchen sink. OH..... one very important piece bring a soft pad or inflateable pad and sleeping bag.......

Thinking of going mid October.Hows the bite that time of year?

Helen H just had a trip with 80 something fish LFT (not too shabby) / The Viking had 50 including 3 Bigeye / 2 weeks ago on the Viking I caught a trip were the boat maxed out on yellows.

That being said, the reports in general, for a nite chunk bite on YFT is currently abysmal. If its going to happen late Sept.or Oct

The biggest problem with the full moon is not the extra light it provides. You can over come that by simply fishing deeper. The real problem is that the tides are extra strong. If you're drifting it can be way too fast. If you're on the hook it can take a lot of weight to stay in the strike zone (I've had to use 48 oz before). On a party boat with everyone fishing with different weights the tangles can be unreal.

The new moon has the same tide issues as the full moon, but becaise the moon is on the far side of the Earth its gravity isn't as strong so the tides aren't quite as strong either.

While the tide can be an issue on the new moon, I haven't noticed this moon phase to be either a good or bad when it comes to catching tuna, versus the full moon which has been consistently bad. That said, late in the season (November/December) when the water temp drops and the chunk bite goes from night to day, the full moon can be the best time to go.
