Gee... I went fishing today and I cant get the bass to hit my lure. I was using a Gibbs Popper. I just noticed the ring with hook is rusting. The wood and paint is breaking apart. Almost time to replace the plug and spend $9.00 for a new one.

Are there better summer top water striper plugs than Gibbs and cheaper?

Is an Atom plug better cause it is not wood?

cordell pencil poppers

for bass - the olive back/white belly is the most realistic snapper imitater.
red head/ white body is a great attracter.

for blues - either the black back or the blue back, with the chrome belly.

i like the large size better, but in early summer the small size will match the size of the snappers better.

i don't make my own plugs. but if i was gonna make a pencil popper, i would buy a small, wooden baseball bat and attach screw eyes and treble hooks. yeah, i like big poppers.

when i fish a nite for bass from the surf all my floating lures are painted black.the reason for this, all i want to do is present a profile on the surface.
if you reel it slow enough it pisses them of and they have to slam it. i was told 20 years ago by fishing guru.steve
mcquade that if you think you are realing slow enuf.stop put your hand in a vice hit it with a hammer.now you can go bass fishing.trust me this works day and night. sssllooww

I hate to be a party pooper, but I can't see how a pencil pop imitates a snapper. If anything a squid, but thats just it-it doesnt imitate anything. Stripers will smack the pencil out of aggression. When sand eels or white bait are present the pencil will disrupt the feed. On the other hand when the fish are not on the feed but are in the area your casting the pencil you will disturb the state the bass are in, which is a resting one. Why do bass just seem to explode on a pencil? Aggression. There are no actual studies on this that I know of, and I base the above on experience and observation. If your interested in imitating a snapper try a 1 1/2 oz jetty caster with a 4-5" rind. I love to throw red fins as a snapper imitation. Summer plugs--Well I would go night so stay away from the pops. In July we have the juvenile spearing-so I recommend going small--Yo zurries with a tease may do the job, mambos or you may try a 3" slug-o with 1/4oz lead head. By August you have the snappers and adult spearing. I like to go large this month. Large bombers, red fins, and small metal lips are usually my first choices--and never never underestimate the needle fish-at any time.....

surface

when the food chain begins on the surface,ex.spearing-snappers-bass,the feeding is done on top in this example.therefor everybody is looking up and 1oz. and 2 oz.cordells might be the only thing that draws a strike.if that does'nt work see what happens with the 1 oz. redfin, that could be the ticket.bluefishmaster:the cordell pencils are daytime poppers, daves talking about floating swimmers at night.also, after you master this, play catch and release, preserve the resource.

what wharfrat said

bill, you really ought to get out in the daylight more often ;) .

bill, towards the end of surfjunkie's last thread we had a good discussion about pencil poppers disrupting a rainbait feed, agressive responses etc. check it out, i think you will find it interesting after you get past the crap at the start of the thread.
