I am ready to purchase a BWS1100 8' Ugly Stick. It seems to me that a Penn 5500SS or 6500SS reel would be appropriate for the rod. Does anyone have that rod and use a Penn SS reel? I am trying to decide which reel to get. Any opinions? Incidently the 5500SS has a graphite body, the 6500SS is metal. Pros or cons?

Warrenh I own all of the Penn SS series except for the 9500. I also have a 8' BWS 1100 Ugly Stick Heavy action rod. However, I put a Shimano 4500B Baitrunner spooled with 50 lb. Power Pro on this rod for use with eels for Cobia and Strippers off the piers and sand spikes in the surf. The 6500 SS has a clicker feature on it that the 5500 SS does not. I prefer the metal body over graphite if given a choice. Why? I feel that metal is more durable over the long haul vs. graphite. Just the mechanic comming out in me I guess. The 6500 SS would be my choice between the two.

Warren,

I have 2 BSW 1100 9ft sticks with Penn 8500's on them. I load them with 25lb test Ande and use these rods for all types of fishing from bottom fishing to trolling offshore for mahi, skippy's and albie's. I personally love these set ups.
