i was interesting in catching some bass/blues and was planning on tossing some lures. when fishing in the daytime (12 to 7)what is the best lure to use. i was going to use an atom popper. i have had succes with this. it is white with blue spots and has 2 treble hooks. would my spinning rod for fluke be appropriate for this fishing? (7 feet medium action with quantum blue runner 50 reel spolled with 10 pound big game)

How are you going to be fishing, boat or surf? Since you mentioned a fluke rod, I'll assume from a boat. I would try the popper and something like a spook or a small pencil popper to really try to agitate the fish into a strike. If that wasn't working, I would work on the bottom with a 7 inch rainbow Fin-S, blue backed rubber shad, or bucktail. Opps, you'd better throw in a diamond jig as well. You will be handicapping yourself with only one lure and are better off with a small asssortment. A seven foot medium rod sounds like you will be having a good time, but 10# line might be a little light. I would use at least 14 to 20.

Is this what you are looking for or was this a "Togmaster" one answer only question ;)

HEY doughboy your on the money

Hey Chris from the question Fluke kid asked it was hard to make heads or tails? But your answer is perfect in the way I myself was thinking. As far as replies feel fre at anytime to answer any question. This is fishing and there are no right or wrongs! It's what will work best. All we can do here is try and give our past experince to others. Now remeber they are fish and swim so ever day is something diffrent. Keep up the good work buddy talk to you soon.

Hagar, do you mean Uh Oh?

No biggy. Then, I would use similar lures just go larger on the plugs. Sometimes the fish may want the smaller poppers and I always carry them too, but I would go with the larger ones if I couldn't carry them all. I have caught bass not much longer than the plug it hit.

I also recommend getting a larger rod, like a 9 foot surf rod with 20 pound line.

And thanks Mike, knowing you, I didn't think you'd mind. I would like to see some more input as to what others recommend. Always looking for new suggestions to try.

doughboy: WHEN U SAID TRY A 9 FOOT SURF ROD.. WOULD THIS BE LIGHT ENOUGH TO TOSS TOPWATER PLUGS AND 1 1/2 OUNCE BUCKTAILS? I AM LOOKING FOR A ROD THAT WOULD BE ABLE TO TOSS 1 TO 4 OUNCE LURES YET STRONG ENOUGH TO HANDLE A 10 POUND BLUE OR 20 POUND BASS AND A REEL SPOOLED WITH 15 POUND LINE??? Absolutely. You would be able to launch an ounce and a half bucktail with no problem. What you want to look for is the type of action the rod has. Every rod in the store will have a rating written on it, find one with the proper rating for the line weight and lure weight you will be using. The longer rod can actually help to increase the distance you cast.

15 pound line is a good weight too, you may just have to play the fish a little more carefully. I prefer the lighter tackle challenges myself. I would also recommend 14 lb fireline, if you can afford it and feel like learning how to tie some different knots and use a mono or fluoro leader. The benefits are greater distance, more sensitivity, easier to set the hook.

Fluke kid?

You seem real excited about fishing and I love it. But your questions are changing so much we need to establish a better communication as to what you are trying to do. Every time we answer, you hit us with some thing else that is different from the answer some one gives you. Hey I?m more them happy to answer anything for you but give me an exact idea of your plans, where you plan to fish? What type of fishing, what time of the day, tide, and. So far you stated a pier. Then you said from surf by a pier? So try and be more direct and then I?ll be able to give you better advice as well as others who are helping. Don?t take it the wrong way but to answer you question correctly these elements are important to steer you in the right direction buddy. Now re think what your doing and start over and will get it right for you Thanks

Endless choices & too many good ones

Cost is a big factor between rods, reels, lures and line. I'll tell you what I use

9 foot Medium action Penn Spinfisher Big Game....Surf rod (12-20lb line, 1-5 oz lure)= about $100

Mitchell Nautil 6500 = about $150
or
Penn 5500ss = about $75

14 to 20lb Fireline (have two spools)

Bass Pro has nice surf combos it offers under its brand name OceanMaster, or if you can get to J & H in Oakdale or Causeway Bait & Tackle out West (don't know exactly where but they get a lot of recommendations here), they could probably set you up with a reasonable priced combo.

Good luck and get in all the fall action.

It's not an exact science

FLUKEKID,

I just wanted to share an experience I had today to demonstrate how one can never know what the fish want from day to day and no "rule" is ever set in stone.

I fished on my lunch break this afternoon. Using a white pencil popper, with a nice slow "walk-the-dog" action I got one strike and then a 26 inch bass. Then, while in the middle of a cast, I lost my footing, and while trying to regain my balance, the bail closed on the reel and my white gibbs PP went flying off.

Luckily the tide was slack and the wind was blowing towards me. So I had some time to try and snag it back. Using another pencil popper I dragged it over, next to and tried to get under the lost lure to no avail. As the tide changed I watched it float away.

BUT, while trying to snag the lost lure, I was just casting and making a straight and fast retrieve of the lure, not imparting any action to it. Well, I managed to get four strikes and another bass while trying to get my lost lure back. So much for fancy lure work.

My point in all of this is to try EVERYTHING. I would have NEVER retrieved a pencil popper that way, and it amazed me that it worked. I learn something new every time out.

If anyone finds a white gibbs pencil popper in the Sound off of Port Jeff, MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Causeway is on Merrick Road just a block west of the Wantagh Parkway, north side. J and H is on the south side of Sunrise Highway, east of the Connetquot and in a strip mall, a little harder to spot. Also could try Combs Tackle on Merrick Road in Amityville, north side, just east of Ketcham Avenue.

FLUKEKID, that Blue & White Atom has been around for a LONG time, good lure. My favorite for daytime use has always been shinny stuff, esp. Hopkins, single hook with White or White n Red hair on it. Also like to use with a teaser bout' 3' up from the lure, esp. small RedGil eel.

Causeway has a 8' St Croix Tidemaster for about $130 that should handle poppers up to 2 oz fine. If you're fishing from a dock, it's along a bay and 8' should be fine. It's a better rod than most 8' custom sticks and light years ahead of anything Penn or Daiwa (or Bass Pro for that matter) sells in the same price range.

I'd keep that Blue Runner reel as a spare and go with a Penn 5500 or a Daiwa Tournament 2600SS. 15# mono and a 30# mono leader and you should be well-armed enough to deal with any blue and most bass. 10# test is too light.

Light years ahead?????

Windcatcher,

Have you ever checked out the Penn Spinfisher Big Game...Surf rods? I have tried the St. Croix's and I like them but I don't see that they are that much better. What are your reasons?

I know they make some low end stuff that too many people seem to base their dislike for the rods on. These Penn rods are a great value. Good quality at a good price. Just, "don't knock it till you try it."
