If you are using bait, try the following.
Clam belly for Striped Bass. Fresh or frozen & salted, both seem OK.
Fresh Bunker or Mackerel for Blue fish. Most success with fresh although have had some success with frozen. Later in the season, have found that snappers work for Blues too.
If you are into live bait, eels work for Striper, however watch the seasons. they get munched by Blues but not great for cathing as the Blue takes the eel behind the hook whereas the Striper seems to suck it all in.
Squid....Haven't had success on its own however dressing a lure or bucktail with squid has been effective although higher percentage of Flatties than either Blues or bass.
Good luck.

You can catch fluke/sea robins most of the time with squid and small fish. I am very good at catching bluefish, hint:my username. I love to use the bait fish I catch in the area. Try to find the closest dock or pier and use a sabiki( a #10 size model, small hooks) rig to catch fresh bait. That's what will guaranteed a very good chance of catching whatever you want.

eg. I was fishing last fall in the beach and I was using bunker. I cannot get the fish to bite. The next day I went fishing with a small rod with a sabiki rig and caught these little spearings, herrings, and many snapper blues. I keep them cold and live. I set my rig up and threw the bait out with a float and another rod with a fishfinder rig. BANG!!! --> Before my second rod was out when I was casting, my first rod bented and the reel scream... I threw the second rod out and reel in the first. I caught a 27" bluefish on a live herring on the float. I caught over 20+ lbs fish on live bait fish.

In short, sometimes you need to match the bait fish the fish are feeding on.

Spearing always work for me but I like to use live herring because Stripers love sucking in these candy. :)

With the amount of shad and herring that's been in our waters the last couple of years no doubt they are the preferred baits.

However, overall I think any fresh fish chunks from an oily fish like bunker or mackeral probably takes bass and blues most consistantly.

I use the rubber band method - only thing that keeps a frozen clam on the hook for more then 2 throws when surf casting.

Regarding enviormentally sound.........

Rubber band rarely comes off the hook. With all of the tackle, lead sinkers etc. that end up being lost in the water - I wouldn't be concerned about rubber bands.

salted clams

you can salt them your self. lay out the clams in 1 layer on a plate cover them with salt <any salt will do>. Then make another layer and cover with salt. put them in the frige for about 2 days. and your set. you can then sep. them and put them in containers for you next trip out.

I use bunker chunks on both blues and stripers.
I will ttry to post a pic of a monster blue I Caught On 6/21 as soon as I get the film back.
I have never used herring but I will give them a whirl next time.
Small bunker stink like **** but they work better than the large ones I think.
