I made a mistake of buying rods/reels last year because I didn't want to borrow from friends or use the boat rods provided by party boats. I was just compulsive, I only started fishing about 2 yrs ago but wanted my own gear. I ended with the following and I need some advice:

Equip:
Rods:
Lamiglass 6'6" IC66XH
St Croix Premier/PC66HF 6'6" Heavy/Fast
St Croix Pro Glass/GS70MH 7'0" Med-Heavy/Med-Fast
Reels:
Penn 920
Shimano Stradic 4000FG
Inherited Reels:
Abu 5500C
Penn 310GTi 4.3:1

I fish inshore in the NY area on private and party boats.

If you had the above equipment, how would you pair up the rod/reel combos?
AND - Is there anything I could do to the Lamiglass rod to make it more forgiving? I foud it was just a little TOO stiff.

Thanks for helping a beginner.

I posted this originally under the "rod" section... but nobody answered.... maybe I'm blacklisted for asking so many beginner questions.

Hello CoolAngler,

You have an assortment of excellent equipment and you will enjoy it for a long time! As time goes by, you will also learn how to maximize your equipment to the fullest.

I am curious why you purchased the Lami 6'6" (IC66XH) model? Don't get me wrong, it's a great "stout" rod… but what were you thinking when you bought it? In general, when one buys any new rod, they will generally wiggle, play, feel, bend and ask questions….

Also, if you are not happy with your purchase and if you still have your receipt - I am sure you can return -or- exchange it. ;)

Hope this helps! :)

Tight Lines,

Welcome back CA...

In answer to your question...I bought the rod last year because:
1- it only cost me $100 &
2- I needed a sitffer rod for tog.

In retrospect, I should have got a more forgiving rod. But this is what I have to work with right now.

Is there any way to make the rod more forgiving? Someone mentioned that I might try adding more guides and more epoxy - that the extra weight might help make the rod a little more forgiving. Any truth to this?

Yes, but it's depends on the blank!!! By adding additional guides and epoxy to the blank may give the rod more "bend" but I would not suggest you go that route! Also, if you want further details… You may want to ask my friend Capt. Neil because he is the rod guru on this site. :)

I am a little confused here… Can you explain what you mean by "forgiving" rod?

The reason why I am asking this: In your first post you mentioned " Is there anything I could do to the Lamiglass rod to make it more forgiving? I found it was just a little TOO stiff."

And your second post you wrote: 2- I needed a sitffer rod for tog.

CoolAngler ,

Don't stress it . You can use the gear you bought and catch plenty of fish .

Learn as much as you can from others with experance , Reading , watch others While Fishing , in tackle shops ( try to use one that seems helpful ) ask plenty of questions , learn knots , rigging , baits , diferent types of line , hooks and leaders , checking sea conditions , moon tides and theres so much info you will blow your mind .

That info will catch you more fish then rods you got right know .

By the time you gain more experance you will upgrade your gear anyway .

Many experanced fisherman who do well are always looking to upgrade anyway .

Many of them started of with equipment that don't even belong in the same room with your equipment and they learned with what they had , then moved onward .

What you already have is a great start know get out enjoy and Fish as much as you can thats where you will get better .

I can tell you if you gave a guy like Crazy Al a Bambo stick , enough line and he went out on a party boat . With his experance he would know how to rig it , use the right baits and catch fish . I would put money on it .

clarification

CA, you wrote -

"I am a little confused here?"

Last yr I needed a stiffer rod for tog because all my rods were light. So when someone offered the lamiglass for $100, people said it was a good deal and I bought it. Ultimately, I found it a bit too stiff for my liking.
Thus, the question: can I make the rod a bit less stiff and forgiving? (I like the backbone, the tip is too stiff for my liking)

Capt J,
I certainly wouldn't try it. But are you saying the rod could be made less stiff if I took it to someone/tackle shop?

Mike Tuna,
I hear ya. I'm going to fish AMAP (as much as poss) this year. I'm learning a lot here and on the web in general about fishing everyday. Hopefully one day I could be of help to some rookie in about.... lol 30yrs? Thanks for your comments.
