HI,

I needed to start a new thread on this so it would not get lost amongst the rest.

So you know my stance, I support the CHOICE to take the two Fish. Similar to how I support a womans CHOICE to have an....well you know. It does not need to be discussed here.

If it were my CHOICE it does not mean I will keep the 2. OK so now you know how I feel.

Here is the question.

If we let the commercials grab these fish. Will that decrease the bycatch of bass that they create anyway. Lets disregard any other species bycatch for now.

IOW, If a comm. boat has to throw back 10 dead bass b/c they are over limit could they now be allowed to keep them?

Am I making sense? I am always confused by how limits and quotas work. Can these boats go over quota for a day? a week? a month?

How do they track their quota?

I hope my question is clear.

Imaginary lines

Good point on the same waters! Many of the stocks we share with other states. Now this is the key point i keep making if we share the same fish why not have the same reg's! A good point was bought up to me at the Freeport show yesterday by a local charter boat Capt. This scenario was put to me your out you get a nice 15 lbs bass you keep it. Then you land the 40 or 50 lber. Your in the boat alone so now what do you do. It is a catch 22 situation because if the big bass is beat to **** chances are he will die? But then again how many guys will throw back the 15 lber to keep the big guy? So like you stated Soman this is kind of the same scenario you mentioned in a different way. Next question is do we make a tagging system for 1 trophy fish per year at a cost which would go back to the fisheries? Or do we protect the bigger fish with a slot limit. This is the key to the proper growth of the Striper

TM, I had a similar experience to what you are talking about

An older fella and myself were bassing by his method on my boat. He happens to be an Excellent chunker. Anyway, we all ready had our to in the boat for maybe a 1/2 hour. He catches a larger fish that is gut hooked and bleeding like a menstruating female out the gill plate. My friends have always said I have a knack for descriptions!

Anyway, he starts talking like he has to keep this larger one b/c it will die. I said yeah, but the other one is all ready or very close to dead. His ego was in complete control. Now as I think about it, he may have kept this one b/c the one I had may have been larger then his original.

Moreover, the first fish went back in the water and floated. The 2nd in the cooler. All I was able to do was verbally trash the guy and lower my opinion of him. I felt that even though it was gut hooked badly and most likely would not have survived it should have been released in hopes that it would.

Could you elaborate on your tagging scenario? I am a little confused.

I know this is asking a lot, but can you address how the commercial boats track their quotas (my original question) and in addition explain how a slot limit is theoretically suppossed to help?

thanks,

Well soman the tags are not implemented at all it was a suggestion from a well know local charter Capt. He said if we would purchase a tag for a trophy fish 41" and up the cost of the tag could go back to the fisheries and you would not have to let the big one or kill the smaller one like in the stroy you just told. It is just an idea for the increase on the stripe bass increase. The tags which commercial guys use are given 125 this yera for the year they have from july 1 till the close to fill 125 tags for harvest. thats how that works.

Somoan,
To answer your original question, in NY no, in the rest of the world yes. I'll elaborate. In NY, commercial fishermen are issued tags, which they have to affix to each individual fish they keep. The only get som many tags, so any additional fish they catch have to be returned to the water, no matter what shape their in. In toehr states, they set a commercial quota and all commercial landings have to be reported. Once they reach the overall quota the commercial fishery is stopped. in this situation we would have fewer dead fish under your scenario.
